MSNBC hosts appearance by Mark Williams, who again smears progressives

On MSNBC Live, Norah O'Donnell hosted Mark Williams -- a New York-based radio host and spokesman for the Our Country Deserves Better Political Action Committee -- who took the opportunity to accuse President-elect Barack Obama of "buy[ing] the office of presidency" and of promising to enact "harmful, anti-American policies." This is merely the latest in a string of appearances on MSNBC in which Williams has made baseless and incendiary attacks on progressives.

Norah O'Donnell aired cropped "John is right" clips, but in nearly all instances, Obama was criticizing McCain

On MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell aired a montage of what she described as "the multiple times that Barack Obama said 'John [McCain] is right' " during the first presidential debate. Following the montage, O'Donnell commented, "I thought this was a debate." In fact, in nearly all instances, Obama was actually criticizing McCain after first noting a point of agreement on the topic Obama was discussing.

O'Donnell left unchallenged Bush Cabinet member's suggestion that Obama was responsible for rumors about Palins

On MSNBC Live, Norah O'Donnell did not challenge Transportation Secretary Mary Peters' claim that if Sen. Barack Obama really stood by his denunciation of any public discussion of Gov. Sarah Palin's children, "he would put a stop to everything that's going on in the liberal blogosphere." O'Donnell did not ask Peters how Obama "would put a stop" to what is being written by people unconnected to his campaign, nor did she note that commenters on McCain's own website have posted falsehoods and smears about Obama.

O'Donnell asked why not let McCaskill give a "red meat" speech at the DNC -- McCaskill did, but MSNBC didn't cover

Norah O'Donnell asked Mike Barnicle, regarding the Democratic National Convention, "[W]hy not position a senator, like Claire McCaskill, up there for five minutes and let her throw some red meat out to the crowd?" In fact, McCaskill did speak on the first night of the convention and did repeatedly criticize Sen. John McCain and President Bush, but MSNBC didn't air her speech during its live coverage.

MSNBC's O'Donnell misrepresented Jim Baker's position on talking to Iran "without preconditions"

MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell falsely asserted that James Baker has taken the position that there must be preconditions before the United States enters into talks with Iran. In fact, at a forum in March, Baker said that he favors the United States negotiating with Iran "without preconditions" over how to handle Iraq, just as the United States had engaged Iran in discussions "about our common interest in a stable Afghanistan" from 2001 to 2003.

MSNBC's O'Donnell issues "clarification" for falsely claiming McCain "called for Don Rumsfeld's resignation"

A day after falsely claiming that Sen. John McCain "called for Don Rumsfeld's resignation," MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell issued a "clarification," saying: "Yesterday, I suggested that John McCain had called for Secretary Rumsfeld's resignation in the past. In fact, what McCain had said repeatedly was that he lacked confidence in Rumsfeld. But he did not directly call for Rumsfeld to step down back when Rumsfeld was still in office."

On MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain "called for [former Defense Secretary] Don Rumsfeld's resignation." In fact, McCain did not call for Rumsfeld to resign; he said the decision about whether Rumsfeld should leave was the president's.

MSNBC's O'Donnell claimed Penn "on his own brought up cocaine" -- but Matthews started conversation

On the December 13 edition of Tucker, Norah O'Donnell asserted that during the same day's Hardball, Clinton adviser Mark Penn "once again brought up cocaine -- twice" in relation to Sen. Barack Obama and later claimed that Penn "on his own brought up cocaine." In fact, the entire Hardball segment was devoted to controversial remarks regarding Obama's past drug use made by Clinton's campaign co-chair, who later resigned. Chris Matthews explicitly asked Penn at least three distinct questions about the topic, and Penn had offered at least two specific responses before he used the word "cocaine."

MSNBC's O'Donnell aired Thompson ad without challenging its claim that Thompson helped "expose the truth during Watergate"

MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell aired a clip of a television ad by the Fred Thompson
campaign, in which Thompson is described as a "courageous reformer, fighting
corruption in both parties" who "[h]elp[ed] to expose the truth during
Watergate." But rather than address the content of Thompson's ad -- contrary to
the ad's claims, Thompson leaked key information to the office of then-President
Richard Nixon about the Watergate investigation and reportedly canceled his 1997
Senate hearings on allegations of improper campaign fundraising before Democrats
were able to present evidence of Republican wrongdoing -- O'Donnell went on to
ask Thompson supporter Liz Cheney, "How well does Fred Thompson have to do in
Iowa?"

NBC continues to report on Edwards haircut, ignores Romney campaign's makeup purchases

Regarding the Mitt Romney campaign's $300 makeup expenditure, NBC News' First
Read blog advised readers on July
17 to "look for [John]
Edwards supporters to use this as a test to see if the MSM [mainstream media]
covers Romney as harshly as Edwards was." Despite that admonition,
a July 19 Today report on candidate expenditures
mentioned Edwards' $400 haircuts, but not Romney's makeup
purchases.
