Vanity Fair's Hitchens somehow missed ample evidence that Clinton is respected by military leaders

On MSNBC's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, discussing the possible appointment of Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, Christopher Hitchens said of Clinton: "It's only true that she's respected in the Pentagon if people go around saying so. I've never heard that before." In fact, media outlets have previously reported that Clinton "has gained a lot of respect among military leadership" and has "built relationships" with military leaders such as Gen. David H. Petraeus and Adm. William J. Fallon. Clinton also received the endorsement of numerous retired generals and admirals during her 2008 presidential campaign.

For second day in a row, NY Times falsely suggested Bill Clinton refuses to disclose source of speaking fees

In an article about whether Sen. Hillary Clinton would accept the position of secretary of state in an Obama administration, The New York Times reported that aides to President-elect Barack Obama "have been reviewing Mr. [Bill] Clinton's business dealings, focusing on the array of his post-presidential activities, some details of which have not been made public. That includes the identity of most of the donors to his foundation" and "the source of some of his speaking fees." But the Times did not note that the source and amount of all of Bill Clinton's speaking fees of $200 or more are disclosed annually in Hillary Clinton's Senate disclosure forms.

Media figures continue to suggest Clinton will pursue rogue agenda if named secretary of state

Media have continued to respond to reports that President-elect Barack Obama is considering naming Sen. Hillary Clinton secretary of state with the smear that she (or Bill Clinton) might pursue her own agenda as secretary of state and not President-elect Barack Obama's, including the assertion that "Obama may wake up one day and discover that Hillary has decreed a new 'Clinton Doctrine' of foreign policy."
NY Times misled on disclosure of Bill Clinton's speaking fees

The New York Times reported that in considering whether to nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, "[t]he Obama transition team is focused on the wide array of Mr. Clinton's postpresidential activities, some details of which have not been made public. This list includes the identity of most of the donors to his foundation, the source of some of his speaking fees -- he has earned as much as $425,000 for a one-hour speech." But the Times did not note that the source and amount of all of Bill Clinton's speaking fees of $200 or more are disclosed annually in Hillary Clinton's Senate disclosure forms.

Newsweek publishes article on purported debate over whether "Obama [is] the Antichrist"

In a Newsweek article headlined "Is Obama the Antichrist?" senior editor Lisa Miller treated as newsworthy purported debate among some "conservative Christians" over whether President-elect Barack Obama is "the Antichrist." In doing so, she gave credibility to the views of RaptureReady.com editor and founder Todd Strandberg, who has, among other things, smeared gays and lesbians, Islam, progressives, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Win or lose on Election Day, Republicans and conservatives hold majority on Face the Nation and Fox News Sunday

A Media Matters analysis found that, on the first two Sundays following the November 4 elections, in which a Democrat took the White House and the party added to its majority in the House and Senate, conservatives and Republicans dominated post-election analysis on both Fox News Sunday and Face the Nation -- a pattern that is consistent with their guest and panelist lineups in the first weeks after the November 2004 elections.

Newsweek asserted as fact that America "remains right of center," but a former Wash. Times editor disagrees

Newsweek's Evan Thomas and Richard Wolffe repeated the assertion previously made by Newsweek colleague Jon Meacham that the country "remains right of center." Thomas and Wolffe cited as evidence exit polling that showed more respondents identifying themselves as "conservative" than as "liberal." But political scientists dispute the reliability of voters' identification with political ideologies, and the former editor of The Washington Times' editorial page asserted "the only problem" with conservatives claiming America is a "center-right" country is that "[i]t isn't true. Or at least, not anymore."

Media react to sec. of state rumors with suggestions of a rogue Clinton agenda, Clinton as Obama's "enem[y]"

Discussing reports that President-elect Barack Obama is considering naming Sen. Hillary Clinton secretary of state, several media figures have responded with smears, including speculation that Clinton would pursue her own agenda as secretary of state and not Obama's, references to Clinton as Obama's "enem[y]," and speculation that Obama is considering the nomination because if Clinton remains in the Senate, she poses a threat of challenging him for the Democratic nomination in 2012 and can "mak[e] trouble" for him in the Senate.

Levin raises straw man in attack on Media Matters

Discussing a Buffalo News column by Douglas Turner, radio host Mark Levin said that "[Turner] has written, among other things, that I compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler. That is a flat-out lie. And he picked that lie up from Media Matters. I never called Barack Obama Hitler, and I never would, because he's not." In fact, neither Turner nor Media Matters claimed that Levin had "called Barack Obama Hitler." Media Matters listed Levin among a group of conservative media figures comparing Obama to Hitler or the Nazis.
Media conservatives claim America is "center-right," but political scientists challenge reliance on voter self-identification

Several conservative commentators claim America is ideologically a "center-right" country, citing as evidence general election exit polls showing that 22 percent of respondents identify themselves as "liberal," 44 percent as "moderate" and 34 percent as "conservative." But political scientists dispute the reliability of voters' identification with political ideologies, and other polling has found that a strong majority favored the more progressive position on a number of issues.

O'Reilly falsely accused ACLU of remaining silent on government check of Wurzelbacher's records

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, Megyn Kelly and Lis Wiehl falsely claimed that the ACLU has not raised privacy objections to the search by Ohio government officials of "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher's records, with O'Reilly saying the organization's response has been "nothing." In fact, ACLU of Ohio executive director Christine Link wrote in a letter that she "was deeply disturbed to hear that state officials approved the use of government databases to obtain information" Wurzelbacher, and the legal director for the ACLU of Ohio told Media Matters, "We would be very happy to talk to him and see if there's something we could do to pursue redress for this violation of his privacy rights."

Bozell said Obama "ran as a Reaganite" and "a fiscal conservative" -- less than two weeks after claiming Obama was espousing "socialism"

On America's Newsroom, Media Research Center president L. Brent Bozell III claimed that President-elect Barack Obama "ran as a Reaganite" and "won over ... the public as a fiscal conservative." But less than two weeks earlier, Bozell accused Obama of espousing "socialism" throughout the "entirety of the campaign."

Pressed by Juan Williams, Hannity again declined to express regret for hosting Andy Martin

After being pressed by Fox News contributor Juan Williams about "having an anti-Semite on his show," Fox News' Sean Hannity again declined to express regret for hosting Andy Martin on Hannity's America. Martin has, among other things, referred to a judge as a "crooked, slimy Jew," and Fox News' senior vice president reportedly expressed regret over Martin's appearance, calling it "a mistake."

Fox News reportedly "now expresses regret for booking" Andy Martin -- but what about Hannity?

The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz reported that Fox News Channel "now expresses regret for booking [Andy] Martin," who has a history of making anti-Semitic and racially charged comments, on Hannity's America. Kurtz wrote: "[Fox News Senior Vice President Bill] Shine says Hannity disagrees with some of Martin's past comments. 'Having that guy on was a mistake,' Shine says. " But Hannity himself defended Martin's appearance on his show and has not expressed regret on either Hannity's America or Hannity & Colmes for having hosted Martin.
