Wash. Post ombudsman admonishes Milbank for using anonymous source, imputing meaning to secondhand quote

Responding to reader complaints about The Washington Post's Dana Milbank's use of an "anonymous secondhand quotation from Sen. Barack Obama," Post ombudsman Deborah Howell chastised Milbank for citing the source anonymously and for imputing a particular interpretation to a quote he did not witness. Howell found that "[n]either [Jonathan] Weisman nor Milbank called the source" to confirm their interpretation of the quote.

Weisman contradicts Milbank's claim that both reporters believe disputed version of Obama's "symbol" quote "was correct as written"

Discussing a disputed version of a comment Sen. Barack Obama reportedly made during a closed-door meeting with House Democrats, The Washington Post's Jonathan Weisman contradicted colleague Dana Milbank's assertion that both Weisman and Milbank "believe the quote was correct as written, and that this supposed 'context' is a recreation, after-the-fact, by Democratic aides who were worried about how the quote looked." Weisman called his own position "a little more squishy" than Milbank's.

Rather than acknowledge flaws in Obama column, Wash. Post's Milbank mocked critics in online chat as "whiners"

In an online discussion, Dana Milbank dismissed participants' criticisms of his July 30 column -- a "sketch" of Sen. Barack Obama's "premature presidency" -- as "whines." Milbank began the discussion by acknowledging that "some of you have some thoughts you'd like to share about yesterday's Sketch on the premature presidency of Barack Obama," and before taking questions, wrote: "I've decided to approach today's chat as a wine writer would. ... Today, I am inaugurating the Whine Enthusiast, in which I will rate your whines."

Milbank accuses Obama of "hubris" while cropping quotes, making false insinuations, and neglecting basic reporting

In his Washington Post column, Dana Milbank claimed that Sen. Barack Obama "has long been his party's presumptive nominee. Now he's becoming its presumptuous nominee." As purported evidence, Milbank misrepresented quotes, neglected to do basic reporting, and advanced the baseless suggestion that actions Obama has reportedly taken are unprecedented for a presidential candidate.

Hillary Rodham Clinton that "[t]he press will savage her no matter what." Indeed, Milbank himself has smeared Clinton or propagated misinformation about her.

Ignoring key bill, Wash. Post's Milbank attempted to refute Obama's statement that he "expanded health care in Illinois"

The Washington Post's Dana
Milbank wrote that Sen. Barack Obama's "signature legislation as a state
senator, the Health Care Justice Act, merely set up a panel to craft a plan,"
not, as Obama claimed, "expanded health care in Illinois by bringing Democrats
and Republicans together, by taking on the insurance industry." In fact, Obama
sponsored a bill that expanded health insurance programs for low-income families
in Illinois.
Following that bill's passage, more than 150,000 additional people reportedly
received health insurance through the programs.

Wash. Post's Milbank compares Edwards' haircuts to undocumented workers at Romney's home while "he's complaining about illegal immigrants"
On Countdown, Keith Olbermann
asked Dana Milbank about the repeated references in
The Washington
Post
to the cost of John
Edwards' haircuts, including in his
own column. Milbank replied that he is "guilty of the haircut
slander" and added: "[T]he $400 dollar haircut speaks of that the
same way Romney having the illegal immigrants twice return to work in his home
even ... as he's complaining about illegal immigrants." While Milbank identified
an inconsistency between Romney's actions and his stated views, he offered no justification
for suggesting a similar inconsistency in Edwards' efforts to fight poverty
while paying for expensive
haircuts.

Post's Milbank failed to note Shays' misrepresentation of Clyburn comments

In his column, The Washington
Post's Dana Milbank, referencing comments Democratic House Majority
Whip James Clyburn made to the Post
on July 30, wrote: "[Rep. Christopher] Shays condemned a House
Democratic leader for saying that 'if the Iraqi war went well it would be bad
for Democrats.' " But Milbank did not provide Clyburn's actual statement, nor
did he note that Shays misrepresented Clyburn's remarks.
