Matthews falsely claimed Obama opposed designating Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization

MSNBC's Chris Matthews falsely claimed that President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, his reported pick for secretary of state, disagreed on whether "we should make the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group" and on whether "we should have permanent bases in Iraq."

That was then ... Matthews lauded "experience" of Bush's Cabinet picks in 2001, but says Obama's selection of prior administration vets is "crap"

Amid reports that President-elect Barack Obama has decided to nominate Clinton Justice Department veteran Eric Holder to be attorney general, Chris Matthews criticized Obama on Hardball: "You could do this in any bureaucratic state, you could do it in the old Soviet Union. ... You don't need elections for this crap." But in 2001, Matthews said of George W. Bush's Cabinet picks, which included veterans of past administrations: "There's some real heavyweights in terms of experience."

Amid rumors of Clinton nomination, Matthews brings back '90s circus

On Hardball, Chris Matthews used reports that President-elect Barack Obama might nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state to "rehash" 1990s-era smears and scandals involving the Clintons. Matthews invoked Linda Tripp and hosted Rep. Dan Burton, whom Matthews asked to discuss the false accusation that Vince Foster was murdered, and Christopher Hitchens.

On Hardball, Matthews forwarded discredited rumor over MN ballots

Chris Matthews echoed the discredited rumor that 32 ballots from Minneapolis were mishandled in the Minnesota Senate race. Matthews asked: "What about these absentee ballots that were found in somebody's back seat and they're now counting them as official -- what is that about? That sounds pretty squirrely or sneaky or what -- I don't know what it sounds like." In fact, a lawyer for Republican Sen. Norm Coleman has reportedly said regarding those ballots that "[i]t does not appear that there was any ballot-tampering, and that was our concern."

Despite Rep. Wilson's assertion that she "stay[s] on white side of gray," Matthews did not ask about DOJ report

Discussing Sen. Ted Stevens' conviction for lying on his Senate financial disclosure forms, Chris Matthews asked Rep. Heather Wilson, "Does it bother you personally that one of your colleagues looks like a crook?" However, after Wilson responded, in part, that "in my office and in my service, you know, I tell everyone that works with me, we stay on the white side of gray," Matthews did not ask Wilson about a Justice Department report that called for further investigation of actions Wilson and others allegedly took surrounding the firing of a former New Mexico U.S. Attorney. The report stated that the alleged conduct of Wilson and others in the case "may have been criminal."

After repeatedly calling McCain's behavior "erratic," Matthews suggested Obama's doing so was a reference to McCain's age

On his NBC-syndicated show, Chris Matthews suggested that when Sen. Barack Obama used the word "erratic" to describe Sen. John McCain or his campaign, he was making a reference to McCain's age. But in recent weeks, Matthews himself has repeatedly described McCain's actions, and those of his campaign, as "erratic."

NBC's Todd falsely claimed 9th Circuit "wants to get rid of the Pledge" of Allegiance

On Hardball, Chuck Todd falsely claimed that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit "wants to get rid of the Pledge" of Allegiance. In fact, in Newdow v. U.S. Congress, a 9th Circuit panel did not decide that the entire Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional, but rather "h[e]ld that ... the 1954 Act adding the words 'under God' to the Pledge ... violate[s] the Establishment Clause" of the First Amendment.

MSNBC's Matthews, NY Times' Seelye pondered whether Biden will "help" Palin "with her chair" at debate

MSNBC's Chris Matthews and The New York Times' Katharine Q. Seelye asked whether Sen. Joe Biden will "help" Gov. Sarah Palin "with her chair" at the beginning of the vice-presidential debate. The question is one that presumably would not be asked if the two candidates were the same gender, and the premise of the question itself is false, as the debate format rules state that Biden and Palin will be "standing at podiums" -- a fact Seelye later acknowledged.

Matthews on Obama's debate performance: "[D]id it surprise you that he was so un-ethnic tonight?"

On MSNBC, Chris Matthews asserted that "we don't know who won this debate 'til we know how, to put it bluntly, the white working class guy, the regular working stiff out there, responds." He later asked Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson: "[D]id it surprise you that he [Obama] was so un-ethnic tonight?"

Applebee's and green tea redux: Reuters' Decker said Biden's "French cuffs" could cause problems for him "connect[ing] with voters"

On MSNBC Live, while assessing a speech on the economy by Sen. Joe Biden, Jon Decker said that Biden does not "help[] his case when he's making the argument on economic issues wearing French cuffs and dressed to the nines. I think that he's really got to connect with these voters." Contrary to the notion that wearing French cuffs may interfere with Biden's ability to "connect with these voters," French cuff shirts can be found for $37.50 on the website of J.C. Penney, a national department-store chain that many voters can presumably "connect" with.

Matthews does not believe McCain would personally join in his campaign's attacks -- but he did

Chris Matthews falsely suggested that Sen. John McCain is unwilling to personally engage in the false accusation made by his campaign that Sen. Barack Obama compared Gov. Sarah Palin to a pig. Matthews stated of McCain: "He would never say Barack Obama called Governor Palin a pig." However, when reportedly asked what he dislikes about campaigning, McCain said: "Probably the negativism, those negative ads and personal attacks, Senator Obama's recent comments about 'lipstick on a pig.' "

Media affix "maverick" label to Palin as well

Since Sen. John McCain named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, media outlets including the Associated Press, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, the Detroit Free-Press, and the washingtonpost.com blog The Fix have taken the "maverick" label the media have frequently and uncritically applied to McCain and affixed it to Palin as well.

Minutes after Begala debunked the falsehood, CNN caption claimed Casey "was denied a speaking role ... because he opposed abortion rights"

During CNN's Democratic National Convention coverage, Paul Begala debunked the claim that Bob Casey Sr. was not allowed to speak at the 1992 Democratic convention because of his opposition to abortion rights. Less than 15 minutes later, CNN displayed the false on-screen caption: "FACT: Casey's father was denied a speaking role at the 1992 Democratic convention because he opposed abortion rights." MSNBC's Chris Matthews also repeated the false claim.

John McCain, "whether he's talking about health care or ... he's talking about what he really likes about Hillary Clinton, how he's worked well with her -- he's trying to hug those voters because he believes that his calculus for victory is right in the middle. It's not playing to the -- to the left," Chris Matthews did not note that McCain has derided Sen. Barack Obama's health care plan as "HillaryCare."

Matthews says Obama's six-point lead is "almost ... negligible" after suggesting a six-point lead for McCain among suburban white women is significant

Discussing a Washington Post/ABC News poll, Chris Matthews characterized Sen. Barack Obama's six-point lead over Sen. John McCain as "almost ... negligible" a day after he falsely suggested -- for the second time -- that McCain's six-point lead over Obama among white suburban women in an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was statistically significant.
