Fox News' Kelly mocked ACORN for accurate statement about Florida registration law

Summary: Fox News' Megyn Kelly mocked ACORN's statement that it was required under Florida law to submit a voter registration form filed under the name "Mickey Mouse" to the Orange County, Florida, board of elections. In fact, Florida law calls for entities withholding voter registration forms to face a fine of $1,000 for each registration they withhold.

I'm sure FOX would prefer that ACORN not submit any voter registration forms. After all, they might be from poor people. Or worse, minorities!

Posted by DorisRussell in reply to shaggles

If FOX had its way, only White , wealthy Republican men would vote.

GOP-Fox is not only a lying right wing Republican propaganda center, they are stanuchly racist and whte supremacist!  Racist White Supremacist Republican Hate Hag Megyn Kelly is just ONE of GOP-Fox's many right wing racists.

The only blacks that right wing racists like Megyn Kelly "likes" are the ones who say "Yes, ma'am, boss" or "No, ma'am, boss" to her.

Posted by pointofview in reply to shaggles

Of Course.  ACORN registers Mickey Mouse, so republicans must be racist.  Dont you guys know any other song to sing?  If Obama does win, I can wait to see how you blame each and every failure of his adminstration on race.

ACORN submits suspect registration forms in a separate pile for the state governments, to make them easier for the state governments to throw out.

But ACORN is required by law to submit suspect registration forms they receive.

Of course, the state government throws out "Mickey Mouse" and so no names are added to the voter rolls in that case.

Posted by eweston8542983 in reply to Eric Jaffa

Eric Foser says their are two Mickey Mouses living in Florida. Nation wide eight Luke Skywalkers. The way parents torture their children, sheesh.

Posted by captfoster2 in reply to pointofview

You really don't know how to pay attention in class..... do you POV?

The Florida law specifically states that every single registration form/application that ACORN recieves..... MUST be turned in.... even if it says Mickey Mouse as the name!

In other words.... it is not up to ACORN to decide whether the Mickey Mouse name is legitimate..... it is the state of Florida!

By Megyn Kelly telling the story the way she did.... she is lying/misleading about the context to which the ACORN representative spoke.... which falls under the catagory of "Conservative/rightwing misinformation".....

The very thing that MMfA exposes!

As for 'if' Obama wins.... I think you can drop the pretext on that thought and simply go with 'after'

Obama has the potential to being the next FDR.... I hold hope that he will.... and his being black with have nothing to do with it in any way shape or form.... it will be because he may well end up being one of the greatest presidents we will have ever had!

It's a shame that no state has a law to prohibit stupid people like Megyn Kelly from working on television.......

Posted by IRONY 101

Hey, Megyn...just to be "fair", why not use this as an opportunity to educate your dumb-as-dirt FOX News audience by explaining how the law does, in fact, require that ACORN turn in ALL voter registration cards and that the bogus ones are thrown out? The impression among many FOX News viewers, from what I can gather from my own experience, is that the Mickey Mouse registrants get to have their votes counted. Untrue... And, just for a little "balance", how about explaining the traditionally Republican tactic of voter suppression.

Man she's hot.  I don't ever watch Fox News.  It's bad for my blood pressure and sanity, but I must say that they do know their eye candy.  The other news channels only have a smattering of babeosity.

There's a simple fact here that the rabid right is missing.  Even if the registrations were to miraculously get through, who's going to vote on Mickey Mouse's behalf?  If this were a scheme to throw an election, it would be the most ineffectual and inefficient scheme ever conceived.  It's much smarter to alter the way that votes are counted after the fact because you can do it at large scale and leave little evidence.

KELLY: I love that, they've got the obligation to submit it no matter what it says. Mickey Mouse, Jive Turkey, which we saw yesterday

Well, if Mickey or Jive show up at the polls, then I guess you can say there's a problem.  The only problem I see is people saw an opportunity to make some cash by filling out fake forms.  These people will never go to the polls!

Well, if Mickey or Jive show up at the polls, then I guess you can say there's a problem.

That reminds me of a place I worked back in the '70s.

The company had a bunch of attractive 20-something females working as receptionists, and guys would hang out in the lobby and try to make them laugh when they were paging someone.  So one day. Management reassigned all the 20-somethings to positions in other departments and brought in a crew of 50-somethings and 60-somethings to serve as our new receptionists.

The first day, people were dialing "0" and asking for all sorts of bizarre pages to be made over the PA, such as "Rhoda Dendron" and "Annie Pasta".  They even slipped in a few celebrity names they figured the older ladies wouldn't recognize, siuch as "Paul McCartney" and "John Travolta".

We had one guy in the computer department whose name was "Ed Sullivan".  People tried to page him, but the receptionists refused - they thought it was a made-up name.  Ed had to go down to the lobby and prove he was a live person, and THEN they started paging him.

:-)

Posted by foghornleghorn in reply to wzwriter

You think Ed had it bad - I used to work with a guy named (this is no lie) Jack Goff.  Try to get that name paged.

Posted by OnceYouGoBarack in reply to foghornleghorn

I've known a Holly Woods, and a Charlie Brown amongst others.  The latter makes me wonder why the guy doesn't simply go by Charles Brown.

My all-time favorite name of this nature, however is the professional baseball player Mike Colangelo.  Say it fast.  I was watching a Mariners-Padres spring training game and he came up to bat.  I thought it was joke.

Another place I worked at had a guy named "Paul Hunt".  One day a bunch of guys went to the lobby, told the young blonde receptionist that Paul Hunt's brother Mike was somewhere in the factory, and they were all supposed to go out to luch - could she please page him?

Imagine what happened when she keyed up the microphone and said "Will Mike Hunt please come to the lobby?"  :-)

Way back in my restaurant management days I could always tell when there was a broadcast of Porky's on TV.  I could almost guarantee that we'd get a caller looking for Mike Hunt.  One waitress who took one of those calls couldn't believe the rude comment I made to the caller when I heard the message.  I had to explain it to her, which was awkward when she didn't catch on to the joke very quickly.

I wonder if Megyn Kelly could get a job as a snotty mom on The Hills.  The role wouldn't be a stretch for her.

-- ACORN says they are required to turn in every application that is filled out --

The St. Petersburg Times has added a little clarity to the statement about the law:

-- Florida does have a law saying third-party voter registration groups must turn in every form without regard to things like party affiliation, race, ethnicity or gender. So far, however, the state has not written the rules to implement it. -- Jennifer Krell Davis, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of State

Ah.  Another distinction without a difference.  Spin spin spin, you beautiful monster.

Posted by Kyle_Broflovski in reply to wesley

So between ACORN's registration fraud, and the GOP's illegal voter purges in swing states, this election will be decided by Mickey Mouse, Jive Turkey, and Ann Coulter?

I predict Obama wins, 2-1

Posted by loonz in reply to Kyle_Broflovski

So between ACORN's registration fraud

It's not ACORN's registration fraud unless the organization told workers to commit fraudulent activity.  And if the County Boards were doing their jobs, no one was fraudulently registered.  "The GOP is making a mushroom cloud out of a mole hill" (I saw this comment on another website).

"The GOP is making a mushroom cloud out of a mole hill" (I saw this comment on another website)."

Well, we all know what the Bush regime says about 'mushroom clouds' being the first sign of the end, so I'd be a little careful in wanting to use it.....

McCain 181

Hey Wes,

What does Ms. Davis' statement mean?  The state hasn't written the rules to implement a law?  I've never heard of such a thing.  A law is a law, it doesn't need rules to implement it!

Unfortunately, Ms. Davis is another in a long line of GOP hacks working in the State of Florida's Department of State.

She just made that up.

Yes, they have the rules-- the law itself.

-- Indeed, under Florida law, entities withholding voter registration forms face a fine of $1,000 for each registration they withhold. --mmfa

-- The aggregate fine pursuant to this subsection which may be assessed against a third-party voter registration organization, including affiliate organizations, for violations committed in a calendar year shall be $1,000. -- mmfa

Can any of our resident lawyers clear this up?

Posted by loonz in reply to wesley

I'm not a lawyer (I'm just a union electrician) but I'll try to answer it anyway.  The law has a list of fines ranging from $50 to $1000.  The aggregate total of these fines assessed to a third party organization shall not exceed $1000 in a calendar year.  In others words, the organization is liable for a maximum of $1000.

-- ACORN says they are required to turn in every application that is filled out --

They also say, "ACORN flags in writing incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in".

I don't know if the form was incomplete...but it sure fits the definition of problematic or suspicious...did Acorn indeed flag Mickey's registration as they claim?

Posted by OnceYouGoBarack in reply to wesley

Do you have a point?

Posted by loonz in reply to wesley

It doesn't matter. The county Board of Elections is suppose to make sure Mickey Mouse doesn't get registered unless Mickey Mouse has a valid SS# and/or driver's license #.

Posted by leftinmississippi

How fitting.  Bill Hemmer and Megyn Kelly are covering the Mickey Mouse scandal, and even then they are in over their heads.

The Right is already preparing their "the election was stolen" meme. They know McCain has no chance at this point, so they're already setting up future excuses. They'll spin that the people did not reject the Republican Party or Republican ideas, it was just those evil fraudulant voters that stole the election for Democrats. Notice the complete lack of attention the recent story about voter rolls being purged in swing states received? Compare it to the ad nauseum reporting on ACORN. Yahoo has a front page story right now from the Politico where Sarah Palin is telling Obama to "rein in" ACORN. Every right-wing blog and radio show is talking endlessly about ACORN. It's of course on the front page of Drudge as well (you can always count on Matt Drudge to help spread the latest Republican meme).

Posted by see it real in reply to Brian in FL

You're exactly right.  The lying, fascist, racist, theocratic, whit supremacist, violent right will blame ACORN, they will blame poor people, they will blame Latinos, they will blame blacks, they will blame black talk radio, or any combination of them, plus some other people and things they don't like.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to Brian in FL

Thing is, if it's not even close, they won't be able to trot out the old "democrats stole the election" canard. Which is why I want to see OBama CRUSH McCain in November.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to Brian in FL

ACORN is a non partisan organization. Obama has no control over them.

Posted by see it real

Obviously neither racist Republican hate hag Kelly, nor the lying right wing Republican Liar Bill Hemmer, have anything to say about Ol' Liar Ann Coulter's voter fraud, and why the right wing corrupt conservative oligarchic fascist U.S. Attorney is allowing criminal Coulter's votr fraud.  ACORN wasn't involved in that.

Knowing hate hag Kelly, in her sister hate hag Coulter's voting fraud case, she will demand that Coulter's accusers be investigated and prosecuted instead.

Maybe ACORN stands for

Ann Coulter's Occupied Residence Nothwithstanding

I think Faux forgot this: GOP Consulting Firm Investigated for Voter Fraud Claims By Ralph Vartabedian October 14, 2004 in print edition A-13 Oregon’s attorney general opened a criminal investigation Wednesday into allegations that Democratic voter registration forms were destroyed or discarded by a political consulting firm working for the Republican National Committee. The allegations involve a voter registration drive conducted by Sproul & Associates, a Phoenix-based consulting organization that was hired by the RNC earlier this year and is headed up by the former executive director of the Arizona Republican Committee, Nathan Sproul.

Posted by magnolialover

So.. These guys follow the law, and they're mocked for it? I thought republicans believed in the rule of law and all don't they? ACORN is NOT responsible for making sure that all of the registrations they take in are accurate, and legal. That is the job of the county board of elections to where they submit said registrations to. They also flag registrations that are suspect, like Mickey Mouse and others. Also, ACORN does not just register say, democrats. They are a non partisan, non party affiliated organization. I don't get why they're getting grief for, you know, trying to get Americans to take part in their rights.

Posted by didi

Does anyone here remember Nathan Sproul? He was the head of the Arizon Republican National Committee. His organization, Sproul & Associates, led a voter drive in Oregon and two other states in 2004. His organization DESTROYED any registration that democrats put in. He was investigated for the fraud but I have not heard of any resolution. I think the investigation was squelched by the GOP.

Posted by wzwriter in reply to didi

I think the investigation was squelched by the GOP.

I did a Google search on Nathan Sproul this morning,  He's still a big muckity-muck in the Arizona GOP.  The investigation into his voter fraud in Oregon back in 2004 was stopped due to lack of evidence - I guess NAthan threw all the evidence out.....

Posted by TadekKorn

Where does FOX get these Hannity clones and the blond bimbos who echo their oral flatus?

Posted by PresidentNeglect

I'm not a lawyer either, but I would explain it slightly differently.  The longer they wait to turn in the registration, the more fines are added.  If the registration is never turned in, the fines add up to $1000. This is applied to every single registration. so if they fail to turn in 100 forms, the fines would add up to $100,000.

Posted by oversight

The pattern they use is to turn a "molehill" into a big evil "mountain" regarding a Democratic party accusation. There is little evidence of voter fraud. But the Media trumps it up and also blows it out of porportion. The next election cycle it will be the Republicans who genuinely carryout mass voter fraud, but when the Media is called to task on reporting it, they will say "It's old news", or "People are burned out on that subject". The Republicans have used election fraud and are planning to use voter fraud. But first they will desensitize the Media about it by using the Democrats as target practice.
