Media figures falsely accuse Democrats of attempting to direct millions of dollars to ACORN

Summary: Media figures have recently accused Democrats of attempting to direct millions of dollars in government money to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) in the financial bailout bill. The accusation is false. Neither the draft proposal nor the version of the bill that was voted down in the House contained any language mentioning ACORN. Those making the false claim were misrepresenting a provision -- since removed -- that would have directed 20 percent of any profits realized on troubled assets purchased under the plan into the Housing Trust Fund* and the Capital Magnet Fund.

They're still at it. Just 5 minutes ago, CNN and Anderson Cooper talked about it.

I expect that sort of thing from Fox - why let facts get in the way of a good story. Come up with a good story, repeat it as often as possible and, it becomes 'true'.

Wow, when Ken Blackwell is getting brought on to comment, you can pretty much discount anything in that entire segment.

would you prefer Brunner.  She is over the top partisan.

as usual, everything turns into a grab bag of goodies.  the bill passed is 450 pages, with 150 billion in tax breaks.  more borrowing money to pass tax cuts.  what happens when the interest on the debt exceeds every other yearly budget item?

Dobbs is one of the worst at playing this "Them against us" game. His populist crap is actually deep seeded racism.

I actually worked for ACORN during a voter registration drive when I lived in Colorado - I believe it was in 2004. They were VERY careful about making sure that we all understood what needed to be done to properly register voters, and they were VERY clear as to what the penalties were if any of us submitted any fradulent registrations. I think the righties are using ACORN as a convenient scapegoat.

I guess these guys didn't get the memo:

ACORN voter fraud by state

ACORN voter fraud charges

Obama has an unholy alliance with ACORN.  Anytime their name comes up, it should be looked at closely.  The provision was floated even though it didn't make it into the final bill.  Just the fact that they tried should give reason to pause.

Obama has an unholy alliance with ACORN

And you have an unholy alliance with reality.

correction - un-reality.

No, they didn't, because the first one links to a WSJ article that repeats the same misinformation. It also humorously links to a blog by the reactionary right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin, who simply has no credibility.

link

The second link shows that ACORN is involved in illegal activities. I know the point you are trying to make. Obama was involved with ACORN, ACORN has engaged in illegal activities, ergo, Obama has engaged in illegal activities. But that is just sheer nonsense, guilt by association, which the reactionary right loves to feast on. To state the obvious, just because an organization you once belonged to has done some illegal things, does not mean you did. Otherwise, every single politician--every single human being--would be guilty.

Not according to MMFA:

" Neither the draft proposal nor the final version of the bill contained any language mentioning ACORN."

Funny this is right out of the main thread:

MMfA posted:

Those making the false claim were misrepresenting a provision -- since removed -- that would have directed 20 percent of any profits realized on troubled assets purchased under the plan into two previously established funds: the National Housing Trust Fund and the Capital Magnet Fund.

It may not have made it into the draft, but at one time it was on the table.  I think MMfA is again telling us what the definition of "is" is.

As for your first post I'm not saying Obama has done anything illegal.  He does have a connection with this organizaiton that has done PLENTY of illegal things most egregious is the voter fraud.  I could post article after article going back to 2000 of ACORN and voter fraud.  I hope that clears up my above post.

But, Tbone, neither that paragraph nor the link included therein makes any claim that ACORN was part of that proposed provision.  The most that can be established is that the state agencies who would eventually get funding could have directed some of it to ACORN - nothing in the proposal would have required or directed that.

The Republican Party has been behind many cases of voter fraud in recent years.  Why aren't you calling for THEM to be looked into as well????

Dobbs...a man living in the 1950's...believing that the USA should go back to the values of the Leave to Beaver sitcom...no African Americans...no Latinos... no unions....

As I said on another thread: Even if this were true, So What? Hundreds of Billions to Wall Street is OK but anything to ACORN is bad?

Let's yse right-wing "logic" on this:

Wall Street - Rich White Men - GOOD

ACORN - Women and Minorities - BAD

Once again racism rears its ugly head among our conservative bretheren.....

Has anyone seen any information on ACORN actually participating in fraudulent voting? I know that there have been instances of voter registration fraud, and I'm not trying to excuse that in any way, but is there any evidence that these non-people were actually responsible for any votes?

The accusation is false. Neither the draft proposal nor the version of the bill that was voted down in the House contained any language mentioning ACORN.

Unfortunately this is MMFA parsing the truth. The bill did not need to mention ACORN by name for the conservatives to understand that the money would eventually get there.

Media figures have recently accused Democrats of attempting to direct millions of dollars in government money to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN)

And thank god they did.

From the Politico:

After several days of rage from conservative activists regarding a provision in the bailout bill that would send some of the profits from the sale of distressed assets the goverment buys into an affordable housing trust fund, congressional negotiators have removed section 105(d) of the bailout proposal, according to aides on both side.

ACORN, a Democratic ally, was not specifically directed any funds in the previous proposal, but money that went to state and local governments could then have been divvied out to the organization, which the GOP said was a deal breaker. Fevered opposition to the provision had become a viral sensation.

Wheeee! Lying and spin are fun if you're Lou "Build a Wall" Dobbs! What is the deal with the right's hatred of ACORN? It's completely out of proportion with the group's influence, budget and overall impact on their worldview. Does it sicken them that some poor person might get a couple of bucks out of the government coffers, or that Democrats champion things like housing and development projects for underprivileged families living on the edge of poverty? Why do Republicans hate poor people? Answer: because they are disposable, replaceable and generally do not vote Republican. Randy

What is the deal with the right's hatred of ACORN?

Do you really need to ask?

Posted by Great American

Hmmm... which political party does ACORN support? That's all I have to say about that.

If anyone looks at the actual statistics of "voter fraud" it is clear there is no widespread problem with individuals voting twice or felons voting...etc. The guise of "voter fraud" let's the GOP criticize and attack any effort to get out the vote or register new voters.

All the effort to demonize community organizations is absurd. Lou Dobbs either gets the same fax as other right-wing surrogates or he reads Frontpage magazine while eating his Obama waffles.
