Brzezinski on Palin: "[I]t would be great if she could hit it out of the ballpark tomorrow night"

On the October 1 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, discussing the upcoming vice presidentialdebate, co-host Mika Brzezinski said of Gov. Sarah Palin: "[I]t would begreat if she could hit it out of the ballpark tomorrow night and that peoplemay really like what they're hearing. They just -- we just haven't heardanything more than the fact that she's very likable and very technicallycompetent. Am I being fair?" Earlier in the segment, Brzezinski also saidof Palin: "The big issue, though, as [NBC News political director] Chuck[Todd] was talking about earlier, is whether or not she's even gotten tothe acceptability bar. And I'm just going to just say, as a woman and aworking mother, I would love to see her do well. I'm just not seeing anythingin these interviews that are leading me to believe that she's got a deep worldview. I'm just -- I'm asking, but I really want to hear more, and Iwant to be surprised at this point."

Well, I for one am thrilled MMFA was savvy enough to catch this ever so subtle yet egregious conservative misinformation.

Good Job MMFA!

I think you'll be really surprised by Palin no matter what she says tonight.  you'll moon over her like a loony sheep, and no ernest and informed policy discussion by Biden will have the slightest sway over your swooniness.

Please provide an Ifill quote pulling for Obama on par w/ Brzezinski's Palin pom poms.

Posted by skeptical in reply to dexteritas0071418

Hey Dex,

Gwen gave a look of disgust and that makes her biased?  The looks she gave?  There is nothing substantive, the author cites looks as the basis for calling her biased?  Are you kidding me?  This is the crap you idiots throw out there?

Get real!

Posted by thomp.steve9098 in reply to dexteritas0071418

It's deceitful of her to not have notified the campaigns of her partisan views in favor of BO.  She had to know that writing her book would cause legitimate concern over her objectivity, yet she didn't bother to disclose this info. Considering that the media in general is nothing more than spokesmen/women for the democratic party, it's no surprise that Ifill leans left, but that she's an Obamaniac certainly impinges on her credibility as moderator.

I Object.

Posted by mrhebert74 in reply to thomp.steve9098

Don't worry. Everyone knows that the worst thing Ifill could do to Sarah Palin is to ask her to talk for a few minutes in response to a question. She would have to do that even if she wasn't pro-Obama.

Posted by deeznuts in reply to thomp.steve9098

Deceitful?

There has been no deceit whatsoever.

First, let's start with the book itself:

[The Book] is a thought exercise on the “black political structure” of the civil rights movement, and outlines how that struggle led to today, where we’re moving toward racial equality. Of course, it would be author’s malpractice not to mention Barack Obama in that scenario, because he is the most visible result of that process: a black man able to run for president on a major party ticket…

link

So the book is about black politics in this country in general, culminating with a black man as a serious contender for the Presidency. Doesn't sound particularly partisan to me. Unless you think the mere mention of Obama's name makes it partisan...but no, that would be stupid.

Second, the book doesn't even come out until freakin' Inauguration Day! It's absolutly impossible for its contents to influence the election in any way.

Third, the McCain campaign officially agreed to the debate schedule and moderators on August 21. They already knew about Ifill AND her book at that time, and they still green-lit the debate.

link

Object all you want. Ifill's nose is clean. McCain said so.

Dex, I just want you to know that I risk banishment from this site for posting an off-topic comment, but even despite that, this liberal is going to help you with your link problem.  Because...I care.

First, pick a word from your text that you want to be the link, and highlight it with your cursor (drag mouse or shift-arrow):

If she was a debate moderator like THIS LADY, it might be a bigger deal.

Go to the top of the comment editor box and locate the "link" icon (looks like 3 links of a chain, right next to the blue "up and right" arrow).  Click on it.

When the "Insert/edit link" window pops up, paste your link url into the box labeled "Link URL".  DO NOT HIT ENTER.

IN THE NEXT BOX DOWN, FROM THE DROP-DOWN LIST, CHOOSE "OPEN LINK IN A NEW WINDOW".

Click the "Insert" button on the lower left.

And there you are.

"If she was a debate moderator like this lady, it might be a bigger deal."

You have created a nice, tidy link that will open in a new window or tab.  Note that neither the validity nor topicality of your link is guaranteed by this method, so don't expect your links to "little green footballs" to be accepted with enthusiasm.

Once again confusing reportage about Obama with reportage for Obama. But I was swayed by the expertise of "PBS viewer Brian Meyers of Granby, Conn.," as well as the remarks of complaints received by PBS's Ombudsman.

Does WorldNetDaily have an Ombudsman?

I would consider it a minor miracle if Caribou Barbie doesn't stumble through the debate sounding like Miss Teen South Carolina 2007, Caitlin Upton:

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our [children].

Probably on the premise that since she's a governor, she must know what she's doing.  Big deal - George W. Bush was a governor, and he's dumber than dirt.  And the country will pay the price for his stupidity for years to come.

She can see a computer on her assistant's desk, and when her cellphone rears it's head and invades her personal space she has to be ever vigilant against dropping bits...

Posted by neon desert in reply to shaggles

It was a cold December night when she got the call:  Santa's snow machine had broken down, and the likelihood of presents being delivered to all the children was in doubt.

Sarah Palin quickly hung up the phone, threw on her toque and mukluks, and dashed out the door.  A quick whistle, and the dogs were lined up.  Swinging the harness over her head, she gave it a toss and placed it perfectly over the pack, and with another whistle, the dogs towed her out into the darkness of the raging blizzard.

She entered the clearing a mere 90 minutes later, and immediately spied a dejected Kris Kringle and 8 dejected reindeer, their pessimism growing with each passing second.  Without even slowing down, Sarah leapt from the speeding sled and dashed to the disabled snow machine.  Flipping open the engine cover, she grabbed the starter cord and gave a mighty pull.  The machine sputtered a couple of times, but wouldn't start.  Turning her ear toward the engine, she gave another mighty pull of the cord.  Suddenly, a twinkle came to her eye, and laying a finger aside of her nose, she gave Santa a wink.  Pulling the engine control computer module from it's mount, she pried open the cover to expose its components.  With her knife, she popped out a capacitor, then grabbing a bobby pin from her hair, some nail polish, and some whale bone from the clasps on her parka, proceeded to install her makeshift device into the module.  Replacing the box, she again gave the starting cord a pull, and the machine shuddered to life like a bowl of jelly, the exhaust circling her head like a wreath.  "Bad cap" was all she said, and giving a whistle, hopped back onto her dogsled, and was gone like the down of a Yukon thistle...

Christmas came again that year, as it had so many years before, with nary a hint of the near disaster avoided by the quick action and technical expertise wielded by a then-unkown college undergrad named Sarah Palin.

This is in fact Mika trying/pretending to be fair. She is in the tank for Obama & anyone who watches Morning Joe everyday [as I do] knows this. I'm not sure why she is bothering to even say this about Palin, except I'll guess she is sensitive to folks pointing out how partisan she normally is. I doubt Palin will hit anything out of the ballpark. I think Tina Fey would be more apt to ;-)

Posted by tommy in reply to jeter2

Jeter, I never watch Morning Joe, but if you do then I would absolutely take your word for it regarding who Mika is for.

That is the inherent stickler in many of these threads regarding pundits who blabber every day, much of their stuff MMFA probably cheers for, but let them say one thing they don't like and Bam, it's up here and that pundit is labeled right wing trash by one post after another.  Best to take it in totality and perspective as you do to get a much fairer sense, thank you.

Absolutly, Tommy.  He's almost as fair as you, which makes him VERY fair.  For me, it's easy to get confused by these partisan parsers with their partisan sniping whines.  For instance, when someone talks about a very likable and very technically competent person and they hope out loud that that person would step to the plate and knock it out of the ballpark, I almost think they're rooting for that person, if you know what I mean.  But, thankfully, we have Jeter2 to explain otherwise.

I disagree. I think Olbermann and Maddow are the fake MSNBC, and all their conservative hacks are real. Whoa. I just blew your mind!

Posted by SueEld in reply to mrhebert74

Interesting spin on things.

Posted by Governor in reply to SueEld

Who at MSNBC apart of Olbermann and Maddow are "in the tank for anyone other than McCain"?

Posted by tommy in reply to Governor

It's basically irrelevant.  Considering Maddow and Olbermann make up the three hour prime time block (Olbermann's rerun airs one hour later after Maddow), and anyone with a lick of sense knows that is when most people watch, then they are the face of MSNBC, a very liberal pro-Obama, anti-McCain face.  Get over it Governor, it is what it is.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

Do the viewers and ratings dictate the primetime "face of MSNBC"? Is it a political bias on the part of MSNBC that determines the programming?

Posted by SueEld in reply to Governor

It is poliitcal bias considering that Olbermann can not even beat the sleezy Nancy Grace.

Posted by tommy in reply to Governor

Do the viewers and ratings dictate the primetime "face of Fox News"? Is it political bias on the part of Fox that determines the programming?

Posted by SueEld in reply to tommy

Tommy If FOX News were the pulse of the nation than Bush should be very popular. The most popular cable news outlet in America, yet the most unpopular President since NIxon. How does this happen?

Posted by worrierking in reply to SueEld

Bush's approval ratings are lower than Nixon's were during Watergate.

As bad as we thought he was at the time, this guy has him beat in the un-popularity contest.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

Tommy:  Fox News is 100% GOP TV.  MSNBC as to anti-GOPers - Olbermann and Maddow, and scores of others who are varying degrees right, middle, and left.

But back to my question: Do YOU think MSNBC's programming choices are driven more by ratings or political bias?

Posted by tommy in reply to Governor

You were the one who dodged the question Governor, so apparently you believe that Fox is driven by political bias and MSNBC is driven by ratings.  And that is ridiculous, considering Fox is the #1 cable channel in terms of viewer ratings.  So it appears that Fox is driven by ratings, and MSNBC by ideology.

Never mind, you don't need to answer, the facts speak for themselves.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

You dodged my question, reworded it as you own, and asked me the same question.

Posted by tommy in reply to Governor

Huh?  I just answered it.  MSNBC is obviously willing to take a ratings hit to Fox to get their ideology out there, to tap into the anti-Bush, anti-McCain sentiment and be the anti-Fox.  So their programming is driven by both, most likely.  However, if their ratings never improve and they are always trailing, they will change and their programming will reflect a more moderate, both sides approach, we will see.

As for Fox, they have their core loyal audience, they are sanctioned by their owner and driven by ratings, they are #1, why would or should they change?  If their ratings tanked, they would probably shift left too, but that doesn't appear to be happening.

So we are left with Fox, MSNBC, and CNN - which in my opinion is the most fair and balanced, which is why I watch them over the other two, when I watch cable news.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

MSNBC is obviously willing to take a ratings hit to Fox to get their ideology out there, to tap into the anti-Bush, anti-McCain sentiment and be the anti-Fox.

And I think they are giving their viewers what they want, just like Fox News.

On that we agree, let them try.  I like Maddow, she is smart and reasonable and has contrary opinions on her show, the few times I have tuned in.  I hope she sticks around.

The narrative in the MSM is in the bar setting. The last gasp for SP will be the over indulged back-patting she will get Friday morning. "Didn't she do great!" (Her flag lapel button glimmered).

But I think we all know it's not gonna happen.

I agree.  With Sarah Palin, the old adage applies: "Stupid is as stupid does."

Posted by donaldmaddog5642

This program is one of several I happen to catch in the morning.  Not that I want to; I usually go to my trusty lap-top for the truth.  The crap on these "news" shows is truly disgusting.  It continues to amaze me that ANYONE could have a positive opinion about Sarah Palin.  Everything about this slimy woman give me the creeps.  There is nothing sincere or real about her.  Her lack of awareness or even curiosity about the world is appalling!  Her air-head persona is terrifying, if only that so many people think she is just wonderful.  She is the perfect example of anti-intellectualism in this country.  Oh, yeah, let's "vote the dummy in!  Why, just look at her; she's one of US!"

Posted by MickD in reply to donaldmaddog5642

Nothing personal against you DMD, but I fear a dismissiveness of the so-called "dumb" voter. John Fund, the conversative Wall Street Journal editoralist, was on Bill Maher and BM was doing the same thing. Dismissing Palin, calling her supporters (and Americans in general) dumb. And Fund came back and said, keep doing it and we'll have a McCain administration. The idea this time is for the typical GWB voter to stay home and think they are losing. The polls are indicating this. Let's not motivate them by calling them dumb.

Posted by donaldmaddog5642 in reply to MickD

Thanks, MickD. You are right, of course.  No sense in giving "them" any more motivation.  I sometimes (often) let my emotions get ahead of my brain. Feel free to pinch me when I do it again.

Posted by Brabantio

Palin will do great as long as she's not asked for specifics about foreign policy, economics or her own record.  Oh, and social issues are a disaster as well, since she believes homosexuality is a choice, victims of rape and incest should be forced to give birth, and emergency rape kits should be paid for by rape victims because of the emergency contraception included (not explicitly stated, but the only reasonable conclusion).

This is a journalism major who can't name a single publication she reads, while she supposedly reads a whole bunch of them.  How on earth is she going to keep her wits about her against a Senate veteran when she falls apart against the likes of Katie Couric?

The only plausible way I see her being capable is if all of her interviews have been a ploy in order to lower expectations.  Considering the amount of mockery that has come from these pathetic displays, that seems like a risky trade-off for an uncertain result.

Posted by donaldmaddog5642 in reply to Brabantio

Good summary, brabantio.  Palin MAY come out of this "ordeal" by depending on her cute personality to disarm, not Biden, but the public.  Joe Biden will be severely hampered by the need to be a gentleman and not seen as attacking her remarks.  Palin will consistently refer to him as "Joe" in order to deflate his stature as "Senator" Biden.  He, on the other hand, will have to refer to her as "Ms." or "Governor" Palin in order to show "respect".  You can be damn sure she will be coached with tiny "bytes" to his record, "truthiness" or whatever weaknesses he might have in his past performances or remarks.  She is also an expert at sarcasm, a powerful weapon.  Her lack of substance will be viewed as "refreshing" and "honest".  I wouldn't want to be in his shoes tomorrow night.

Posted by commonsenseliberal in reply to donaldmaddog5642

I think Biden knows what to do.  Even though he has had some issues in the past with his gaffes and whatnot, I believe he is a gentleman at heart - and a smart one too.  Biden is gonna clean Palin's clock.

This isn't the time for people to scream about sexism in the debates.  It distracts attention during one of the most important presidential elections in history.  IMHO, Biden should treat Palin as he would any other opponent during a debate.  Why should he treat Palin with kid gloves?  World leaders won't - especially world leaders from countries where female politicians are abhorred (witness: Afghanistan and Pakistan).  Palin is a light-weight.  She's unqualified, ignorant and probably the worst candidate for vice-president.  Hell, she's even worse than Dan Quayle!

I know in my lifetime I never thought we would see a VP Candidate worse than Dan Quayle, but she makes Dan Quayle look like FDR.

Brabantio:  Your last paragraph says a great deal.  I agree with this scenario 100%.  Most of my friends share this belief and have made any comments to that affect.  Gov. Palin and her handlers have "set it up" perfectly.  Like the guy who sits down at a poker game and says, "Gee, fellas, I don't know anything about this game.  Ya hafta be patient with little ol' me.", and begins to clean everybody's clock.

Governor Palin is eligible and qualified to be President based on the requirements set forth in the Constitution (35 or older, natural born citizen and been in the country 14 years...).  All the other talk about who's most "qualified" is merely opinion.  And talking about Palin's relative inexperience opens up Senator Obama to the same criticism.  The downside for Obama is that he's the top of the ticket.  Lloyd Bensten was clearly more experienced than Dan Quayle at their VP debate yet Dukakis/Bentsen still lost to Bush/Quayle.

I think Mika was sincere in her wish for Gov. Palin to do well; it's on a personal level as opposed to political.  Both women are successful working moms in the national spotlight.  It is obvious that Gov. Palin has much to learn about national and international affairs.  Yet her status as a "clean slate" is also a plus when Congress and the President (most of whom are career Washington politicians) have the lowest approval ratings in recent memory.  Part of Gov. Palin's problem stems from her having to be "on board" with McCain's worldview and not say something that differs significantly from the top of the ticket.  That hamstrings Palin and the look on her face during interviews reminds me of someone who has to come up with an answer she really doesn't want to give.  That has backfired for McCain thus far; hopefully the "handlers" will let Palin be Palin at the debates and let the public decide.

Mika Brzezinski is one of the worst characters on Cable ever.  I think it is only because the ego of Joe Scarborough is so strong that they need someone to feed it constantly and there aren't many people with a brain who would tolerate him.  She sits there day after day...chirping her approval or disapproval of every word uttered as if we were all waiting to hear if Mika endorsed each part of every sentence.  She is like a caricature!  Ever since Sarah Palin came on the scene she has been overtly fawning and she's never stopped.  One can only assume from her worship of Sarah Palin that Mika can't keep her own life together as a working mom and now believes that anyone who can become Governor and have 5 kids is automatically worth your vote to run the country.  I'm amazed it took MM this long to come up with a story about Mika's unerring devotion to Sarah Palin.  It's been there every morning since the convention.

Morning Joe ran the Couric clip of Palin talking about her "best friend" of 30 years who happens to be gay.  Palin said that wouldn't be a choice she would make for herself.  That totally went over Mika's head, didn't even register on her face... homosexuality is NOT a choice!

Reading through yesterday's show transcript, they all sound like a bunch of jokers or idiots.  Mika needs to snap out of it!

A bit off-topic, but am I the only one getting tired of being referred to as "Joe Six-Pack American" by this slimeball GOP VP candidate?
