Savage on "liberal social activism": "They imposed affirmative action on me and stole my very birthright simply because I was white"
Summary: On his radio show, Michael Savage said, "I grew up with parents who went through the Depression. And I went through a sort of depression in my own life as a result of liberal social activism. They imposed affirmative action on me and stole my very birthright simply because I was white."

This is the only *man* I've EVER heard saying 'stole my very birthright..' And how does one qualify for it? Do you need a credit card, two forms of ID and a money order?

Your birthright to a society in which people treat you better than others, simply because you are white and they are not?

Yawn... yet another story by mmfa about stolen birthrights. How many is that, now? about 235? This is the only web site that even cares about birthrights....well birthrights of ONE person. Keep up...yawn...the good work, mmfa. So many people care about this issue!

Apparently Savage is the one who cares about "birthright". MMfA just points it out because it's racist, which isn't something you would seem to excuse since it's a right-winger in question.

"White trash" is an ugly, racist term. I don't disagree that Savage is white, or a piece of trash, but I find "white trash" patently offensive. I see from further down that others feel free to use it as well, but I think it's hypocrisy for us MMFA readers to lambast racist talk in the media and then turn around and employ racist terms ourselves.

My parents were little kids during the impression, so I guess I'm from another world. I just don't feel that my birthright was stolen because I wasn't handed everything to me. I am a white heterosexual male, but I'm not a Christian, maybe that's the box I didn't check.
What a whiny, bitter, jealous loaf this guy is. He's probably rich, and he's semi-famous, but angry as hell because it wasn't as easy getting there as he thinks it should have been.

As a therapist, I must tell you Col. Sanders, there is very little effective treatment for racists. They have such poor identity problems that they must find a bunch of people they can feel way superior to. Amazing that racism is either learned at the mama or daddy's feet, or it is a method people with very poor self image cling to to make them feel better about themselves.

It's barely code, really. If someone thinks their natural rights are being taken away because black people are made equal, then of course those rights mean racial superiority.
By the way, doesn't Savage like to talk about the "victim mentality" of black people, or is that some other nutcase?

I can only assume that Savage is referring to the by-product of affirmative action, which is reverse discrimination. However for him to whine about it given he makes a living off of sweeping unfair generalizations and shock jockery insanity, he doesn't get much sympathy from me.

If you believe that all people are inherently equal and deserving, then what is "reverse discrimination"?
Let's say 50% of people are white, 50% various minorities. If you work within the idea that people are equal, then acceptance into universities and jobs should reflect those percentages. A white kid who is in the bottom half of candidates shouldn't get in, because that pushes someone who is in the top half of their particular group out.
So "reverse discrimination" is just the result that you should get anyway if you think that all people are equal. Why is that concept valid for Savage or anyone at all?
Posted Monday September 29, 2008 4:44:24 PM EDT / Flag this comment
Posted by tommy in reply to Brabantio
I never said anyone is inherently "deserving", no clue where you got that. Affirmative action is the very act of discrimination itself, it's just in reverse.
Posted Monday September 29, 2008 5:05:12 PM EDT / Flag this comment
Posted by peebs755 in reply to tommy
just a question. If its the REVERSE of discrimination, doesn't that make it NOT discrimination. Reverse of black is white. White is NOT black. Reverse of good is bad. Bad is NOT good. The reverse of discrimination is INCLUSION. Inclusion is NOT discrimination.
Posted Monday September 29, 2008 5:18:03 PM EDT / Flag this comment
Posted by tommy in reply to peebs755
I didn't say it was the reverse OF discrimination, it is discrimination, just reverse. In other words, instead of "fixing" discrimination, which is what it supposedly intends to accomplish, it actually discriminates against another.

Do you think people are inherently equal or not?
Because if you do, then discrimination for the purpose of social justice certainly does remedy past discrimination against minorities.

"Made up"? Who am I supposed to be misrepresenting, and how?
If people are equal, then they deserve the same treatment and opportunites. Why not keep it in place until the disparity between education and income becomes negligible?

I never said anything about deserving at all. That implies that all people are equal in what they deserve, regardless of performance, character, actions or otherwise.
Another attempt by you to derail an argument by inserting something I never said or meant. Your dishonesty in that area "deserves" no response from me. If and when you ever decide to argue with integrity, you let me know.

You never said anything about "equal" either, if you go back and look. I didn't attribute anything to you at all, I asked you a question. Why you are going off about this fantasy that I'm "inserting" something that doesn't belong is a mystery.

No, you send the intelligent people of every race to Harvard. The point is that since all races are equal, you base judgment on more than just GPA. Poorer areas, which are disproportionately black, have poorer schools. Those people also might have to work while going to school to help with the bills. An inferior white student who had money for tutors might show up better than a black student who has a ton of potential. That is the sort of thing that keeps institutional racism going.
Glad I could clear up that little misunderstanding you had.

It's code for white supremacy. Like the guy they used to call "Gun Nut Ron", who phoned in to all the radio talk shows back when I lived in Colorado. He actually said a few times over the air that the biggest problem he had with Affirmative Action was that it took jobs away from white men.

Which, come to think of it, sounds like something out of apartheid South Africa as sought to expect whites (especially so those of Afrikaner origin) to maintain support for apartheid.
("Afrikaner" is a South African term used with reference to such descended from the original waves of Dutch/German/French Huguenot immigration to the Cape of Good Hope colony, starting under Jan van Riebeck in 1654. Their traditional language, Afrikaans, is a close relative of Middle Dutch.)

The delusion that minorities and liberals had conspired to deny him his "birth right" was simply a far more comforting explanation for his failure than admitting that he simply couldn't cut it in academia. He'd rather rage incoherently against imagined enemies than face his own demons, and whatever "success" that he has since found has come in conning other weak, like-minded and delusional failures into embracing his paranoia.

If America has not come to realize that this is one of the faces of evil that drive what has become of the Republican Party. This is the kind of intellectual stupidity that created the corruption of mind and spirit that destroy great Democracies like Rome, and Greece. However Today's Republican Party looks more like the Theocratic Fascist Nazi Party of Germany, that will ulltimately destroy our country. If we are to retain our freedom this evil must be purged and another Constitutional minded Party formed.

Savage, like Hannity, is a voice of the fringe wing of the Republican party that has held the American people hostage, for the last decade, to their cynical disdain of the Constitution and the values that America (despite their best efforts) still stands for.
Is not there a name for those whose main purpose in life is to hold liberty and freedom in contempt, to call for riots in the streets, to defile the Constitution with their malicious and criminal tendencies, to abandon their allegiance to their country... ? Oh. I guess his name is Michael Savage...
Birthright? Why doesn't Savage try reading the Bill of Rights and the Constitution before he speaks and _abuses_ his Constitutionally given Rights?

And FYI to you...unless someone in America Is super priveledged or wealthy than America is hard for everyone....Everyone has to work hard and try their best to be successful...it doesn't fall in anyone's lap who is not Born Rich or Priveledged.
Now...some who are born extremely poor (whether black, white, hispanic, or whatever) will have a harder road to toil to become successful...but In America that can happen and does happen.
Back to Savage's point...he is saying that sometimes just because a person is white they get passed over because the position requires a minority to fulfill quotas...so the white person is passed over even though he/she might be qualified...now once again I am stating the "Abuse" of Affirmative Action is what Savage is railing against.
On another side note....how long can a person rely upon excuses?

Let's go with the framework that you believe people of different races are equal.
Let's say that 50% of people are white, 50% various minorities.
Within each group you have a top half and bottom half of qualified candidates.
If you're within the bottom half of white candidates, you don't deserve a job. This is because you would be pushing out someone who is in the top half of their particular group. Under the principle that all races are equal, this is mathematically provable.
If you don't believe people of different races are equal, then it's much easier to complain about some great injustice to white people. Racists love to do that.

"... sometimes just because a person is white they get passed over because the position requires a minority to fulfill quotas..." - CPA5
I'd like to see you cite a single case of this happening in the last quarter century, since the use of quotas was ruled illeagal by the Supreme Court sometime back in the 70's. This is just another right wing myth, created in order to con poor whites into believing that it is African Americans who are responsible for the failure of some whites to secure good jobs. It is a means of dividing working class people by setting them against each other. Just as the Savage Weiner has long lied to you about his losing his dream job because of Affirmative Action, so he also lied to you about just how Affirmative action actually works. He whines and he lies about how his "birthright" has been stolen from him, knowing that many whites will adopt this same lame excuse and vote Republican, even though this will be in direct conflict with their own economic and political interests.
Wake up, dude.
The Weiner is playing you like he was Yo Yo Ma and you were his cello.

You must not pay attention to how things really work. You must believe all our politicians are honest. You must believe that the rules are always followed. You must believe that people are inherently good. You must believe all those things to truely believe your above statement.
If I didn't state this above I should have...I don't believe everything savage says...so about this birthright issue I'm not in that camp....but i see where he is coming from.
And yes I believe that whoever is most qualified deserves a job...no matter what gender or what color that person is. But these cases happen by people that ABUSE certain doctrines.....think of it like this...your best friend Reverend Wright is the Human Resources person of your favorite company who does all the hiring:)

"You must believe that the rules are always followed. You must believe that people are inherently good."
You're making an argument for affirmative action. To oppose it means that you must think that the system will fix itself, that people will correct institutional racism just because they should. But people don't follow the rules, and aren't always inherently good. So that is exactly why affirmative action exists.

I never said Affirmative Action was wrong...but don't be fooled....A.A. will never ever ever solve any issues of racism. A.A. is like behavior modification....that never works...the only way to change people is to see people change their BELIEFS....a Belief is what changes someones ATTITUDE and someone's attitude will ultimately cause someone's BEHAVIOR and effect that persons CHARACTER.
Affirmative Action is man's attempt to solve Behavior....but it will never be able to change a belief.

But the more black people are brought into the middle and upper classes, the less hold the belief will have. This is a fundamental of group dynamics.
