Despite long history of political "lipstick" references, AP's Pickler linked Obama's to Palin's

Summary: The AP's Nedra Pickler wrote that "lipstick" has become "a political buzzword, thanks to" Gov. Sarah Palin's "joke in her acceptance speech that lipstick is the only thing that separates a hockey mom like her from a pit bull," and suggested that therefore Palin's joke had something to do with Sen. Barack Obama's reference to "lipstick on a pig." Yet Obama had previously used the expression in this campaign -- before Palin's reference to lipstick at the RNC -- and as Pickler noted in the same article, Sen. John McCain himself has used it. Indeed, the expression, and similar ones, has been used by politicians for years.

But it makes the horse race so much more interesting if they allow the reps to drum up this false controversy.  Who wants to hear policy talk anyway?

Great research by MMFA, thank you. Also Tweety Matthews was using this tonight in his discussion on this topic, he actually was going after the GOP liars.

Even if, for the sake of argument, Obama's remark, a common one, was intended as a take off on Sarah Palin's lipstick reference, where's the beef...or pork? By no reasonable or rational construction of Obama's remarks, in the context of his entire remarks, could it be said that he referred to Sarah Palin as a pig or that he intended to. So, if Obama did appropriate Palin's lipstick reference for his own joke, what is Sarah Palin's gripe? That Obama appropriated her lipstick reference? Does she own the rights to lipstick references now? No one can ridicule her lipstick remark? In the context of the insulting and demeaning remarks she's made about Obama, ridiculing his work as a community organizer, for example, is Sarah Palin off limits to any ridicule because she's a woman? IMO Sarah Palin demeans herself by making, or allowing, an issue out of this. It says that, as a woman, she demands kid gloves treatment...she can't be ridiculed. When has a Vice Presidential candidate ever been immune from ridicule? Welcome to Presidential politics, Princess...

Hi.

It's not that Obama used the phrase; this post by MMfA is a red herring. The point is that Obama referred to Palin as "lipstick", a crucifixtion-worthy offense if any GOP-voting white mail said it about pretty much anyone ("eh, Sebelius would've just been 'lipstick' for the Obama ticket".)

It was toward Palin. He didn't call Palin a pig, he referred to her as lipstick on the "pig" though. He did. He paused through the phrase so that everyone "got" it. He was clearly referring to McCain as the old stinky fish.

Do I think it's worse than what Kerry went through? No. Do I think that Obama and his campaign and supporters are any better than Rovian acolytes? Not anymore.

The problem isn't that the Obama campaign and the unofficial stormtroopers of Dkos & the HuffPost have resorted to smearing and slurs as well, its that they think they're above the politics or that they still represent "change".

I don't think Obama's remark had anything to do with Sarah Palin...other than his lipstick joke topped her lipstick joke. The insult was directed to John McCain, not to Sarah Palin. What all this tells me is that Princess Sarah is obviously considered off limits to any of the rough and tumble of presidential politics bec ause she's a woman. Hell, they won't even let the press talk to her...how elitist is that? Aaaah...The Princess.

The reason why the far right jump to the conclusion that the remarks were about Palin is that they actually believe Palin is lipstick, a pig or whatever else they're pushing.  Why else would they jump to that conclusion so quickly?

And even if the remarks were about Palin, I don't see anything wrong with them.  If Palin can't take the heat, she shouldn't have entered the kitchen.  All I've heard from her so far is incessant whining.

She's the Princess...  Don't play too rough with her...that's sexism. Meanwhile she's trying to rip your throat out a la Dick Cheney. What a bunch of frauds...

Posted by dexteritas0071418 in reply to IRONY 101

Who's whining now?

Posted by loonz in reply to dexteritas0071418

Palin.

Pay attention next time.

Posted by tippy in reply to loonz

Is Palin whining herself?  I've seen the GOP trot out various would-be defenders of her honor, including Jane Swift and a few other women, but I haven't heard Palin say anything.  Did I miss that?

The point is that Obama referred to Palin as "lipstick"

Palin is not the lipstick; she's part of the pig.  Palin is a liar, an extremist and possible criminal and the McCain is trying her into something else.  His whole campaign invovles putting lipstick on a pig.

That should be: "is trying to turn her into something else".

Good grief this is an insult towards anyone with intelligence. You don't have the faintest idea that it was directed towards Palin. By context, it clearly was not. Do you have some special mind reading powers that you know what Obama meant?

Let's play  your game. You said "The problem isn't that the Obama campaign and the unofficial stormtroopers." Oh my God! You just compared Obama to Hitler! Now no matter how many times someone points out that the actual quote didn't comare the two, I can just keep coming back with the line "Oh c'mon, Dex was clearly referring to Obama."

Do you realize you are forwarding fake outrage that even the main stream media (which tends to let Pols get away with a lot) think is ridiculous?

FMP, if you haven't noticed the behavior of our wingnut friends here lately, I don't think the word "ridiculous" is in their vocabulary any more. They used to have a grasp of it, but something's going very wrong.

My guess is, even though this election looks like it's going to be pretty close, and they may even take the White House, deep down they know they're being scammed. If McCain & Palin are elected, it may be the biggest hoax perpetrated in history, and I think even some of the hardcore GOPpers can't block that out of their minds.

Yes, I've noted it, though at the same time they seem  to be not as numerous as in the past, and not as viscous. After you point out the facts, they either disappear or offer a few stupid insults and then disappear. I do think that they know that Palin is lying through her teeth, and that makes their argument look week.

But have you looked at any of the comments on other web sites? The freepers are out in full force. Palin has really whipped them up. They all say the same thing: I was once a Democrat, but I am so disgusted with Obama...(right!). Or, they all revert to smugness. Obama is in meltdown mode according to them. His campaign is self destructing. Dems are losing.

They are all getting the same talking points. And McCain is using the same strategy, to make it look like Obama is losing the election, desperate, so he will say anything. I'm talking about the wolf ad, which compares Obama to a wolf stalking Palin, and then says "down in the polls, Obama will do anything to win." (That is actually a paraphrase.)  The smugness of the freepers is unbearable. Remember about 4 years ago, how they insulted us with the message that we were basically losers? I had forgotten that, because, with Bush having such low approval ratings, they had stopped their trash talking. They are back.

But it will be funny if their smugness and confidence turns out to be ill founded. Clearly, McCain has disgusted the media  and may have used up all of his fake outrage cards.

And the GOP does not seem outraged about the single mother who has 2 kids and no health insurance and one of the kids gets sick, or breaks a leg and she has to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills.

Would you please pass whatever your smokin over here?  I'd like to see meaningful connections and symbols in everything in my world as well.  Or maybe I could just stop taking my meds and it would start again...

This is nonsense. It is false outrage to strir a false controversy.  Nothing more.  Obama's response was spot on: All they do is take innocent remarks, take the out of context and twist them into something thet're not to drum up false controversy.  How anyone can't see this is beyond me.  How anyone can still support McCain is beyond me.  You're being lied to.  You have to be blind or insane not to see this.  How can anyone still support this man?

This country stands on the brink and you people are still 'outraged' about lipstick and pigs?  Well here's some strait talk for you: SARAH PALIN IS AN IDIOTIC RELIGIOUS ZEALOT.  JOHN McCAIN IS A HYPOCRITICAL SELLOUT WHO IS WELL PAST HIS PRESIDENTIAL PRIME, AND HAS NO IDEAS OTHER THAT T OCONTINUE ROVE/CHENEY/BUSH POLICIES, in that order.  No sybolism needed, just the strait truth.

Oh boy. I just am amused in a very sad way that people are more concerned with a perceived use of a common phrase by Obama as opposed to the real lying done by Palin and McCain.

McCain jumped on this as a stupid trick so they could keep on lying.
