Conservative echo chamber pushes story about Obama's brother, despite brother's reported refutation

Summary: Numerous conservative media figures have promoted a story in the Italian edition of Vanity Fair that reportedly quoted Sen. Barack Obama's half brother George Obama as saying that he lives "on less than a dollar a month," but have disregarded reports that quoted George Obama saying, "They say I live on a dollar a month, but this is all lies by people who don't want my brother to win," and, "The magazines, they exaggerated everything."

 is this tax evation?

All the right wingers who have been pushing this story should be ashamed.  They don't care that it has embarrassed his half brother and dragged him into a smear.  They certainly have no trouble with being liars.

Posted by eb in reply to mary59

One minute the wingnuts are accusing him of being disloyal because of his foreign background, the next he is accused of being indifferent to his African connections.  crazy!

Posted by snoopy in reply to eb

If he sent his half brother money rest assured the right would be saying Obama wants to tax you to give his brother money. No win strawman...

Posted by wookie in reply to mary59

You could fill a library with all of the things right wing pundits should be ashamed about.

I posted this about this non-story on another thread. The one thing, as an African that l am really glad about is that Obama's half-brother is not a Zulu or a Masai tribesman. Cue lots of attempts to film him in a grass skirt with a bone through his nose.

-- I live well even now -- George Obama

Unemployed, 26 yrs. old and living in a shack while his friends and relatives support him.

Yep, living that old high life...no wonder Obama balks at sending him a little monthly stipend.

Ha!!

Yes because the one thing that right wingers in the UK and US are famous for is the generous giving they do for the poor and impoverished!!! It's not like any right winger has spouted off the mantra "give them a hand up, not a hand out". I've never heard of a poor woman with children in the US being called a "welfare queen". It's not like you have 30 million people below the poverty line while 5% of the US population have 90% of the wealth not spunked over to China!! Yes, it's always fun to listen to right wingers talking about how nice they are to the poor. It's almost as much fun as them talking about how nice they are to immigrants!!

Posted by wesley in reply to ukobserver

That's a good point. Since Obama is adverse to sending any money to his brother, the better solution would be for you to help him with his immigration papers...so he can follow your footsteps and get the heck out of Africa and move to the UK...that's a lot easier than sticking around the ole neighborhood and trying to improve your own country.

He sure wouldn't want to immigrate to that god awful place you described as America.

Posted by wookie in reply to wesley

The old right wingers equal America line. Although it doesn't work as well when he says its the same in the UK.

Posted by ukobserver in reply to wesley

As you seem to know so much about him and his circumstances i'm sure you can post his address and other information so l can help speed it along;-}

It would be great to give him a hand if he wishes it. Then again as he himself has said that he doesn't want the help what should l do, knock him on the head, stick him in the hold of a boat and drag him over to England so he could work for me? I know that there are some Americans who think that this idea still has merit in this day and age, even if their numbers are shrinking, l just don't know how convincing l could be to pull that idea off.

Or...they could just be descendants of Tippu Tip...the Swahili slave trader who amassed a fortune capturing and selling black slaves. Now there's a real African patriot.

Posted by snoopy in reply to wesley

Who did he sell them to? That's right, white dutchmen. A big part of that white european descendancy the right claims is america's true birthright.

Posted by wesley in reply to snoopy

C'mon snoop...you're better than that.

A few conservatives rail about white-european birthrights...but that doesn't describe "the right" in general...it's not any more accurate than describing the entire black population as followers of the Black Panthers.

Posted by ukobserver in reply to wesley

Yes because black people were so powerful in America in the 50's and 60's!! I'm sure groups like the Panthers were completely unneccessary back then.

Thanks for the slavery apologist perspective.

This is a quote from an actual descdendent of Tippu Tip:

"It was the trend of the time, that was business, purely. You would either be a slave or a slaver. You choose the lesser of the two evils. And if you are in a position to be a slaver why should you be a slave?"

And again you show that your reading comprehension skills need some work.  George Obama said he wants to remain in Kenya.  He says he's Kenyan and kind of likes it there.  Hhmmm...if that's the case, why would Barack Obama need to do anything with regards to George Obama immigrating to the U.S. and "following in Obama's footsteps"?  George Obama wants to stay where he is.  Please re-read the article.

Further, George Obama is supported by other family members.  He was studying to become an auto mechanic.  Sounds to me as though he's doing alright - and George Obama has said as much.

Keep working off of those false talking points.  All you righties can do is lie and smear.  And shame on you f**kers for embarrassing George Obama like that.  WTF does he have to do with this election?

Posted by mary59 in reply to wesley

"George, 26, had been living a quiet life, studying to become a car mechanic until earlier this week when Vanity Fair tracked him down to Huruma, on the edge of Nairobi"

Wesley, what is wrong with you?!

Posted by ukobserver in reply to mary59

Well, you know what they like to say:

"Truth has a liberal bias"

Or as the aussie Murdoch would say:

"Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story"

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to mary59

The complete lack of Nepotism is astounding. The horror of Obama's relative(whom he barely knows) getting his life together on his own without handouts is appalling.

The conservative lack of self-awareness, and hypocrisy, is priceless.

Posted by ukobserver in reply to wesley

Why don't l change a few words of your post:

-- I live well even now -- George Obama

Unemployed, 26 yrs. old and living in a shack while his friends and relatives support him.

Yep, living that old high life...no wonder Obama balks at sending him a little monthly stipend.

To this:

-- I live well even now -- George Jones (Ignoranceville, in the county of Redneck, Nabraska)

Unemployed, 26 yrs. old and living in his mom's basement while his friends and relatives support him.

Yep, living that old high life...no wonder Wesley balks at sending him a little monthly stipend.

See? So much better.

The MSM, whenever they quote Rush, or Sean, or any of the cast of "Fox and Friends" should add a disclaimer that what they say is frequently untrue or at least misleading and sometimes disregards widely reported information.

Off topic Col., but I thought you might appreciate this bit of exotica.

Kid's got some range, Craig! I'm contacting Mike Scioscia right now to go sign this exotic elitist Hawaiian.

I wish MMFA would have continued the comments of Radio Rose concerning the Matthew referrence. That is when she said that Obama was "WHORING HER SCRIPTURE". It is amazingly stupid.

Posted by NiceguyEddie

Putting aside that it's apparently b$llsh!#...

These are the same people who, when pressed about the slave wages their corporatios pay their workers in these same countries, will tell you that it's OK [to pay someone pennies a day] because "it's a lot of money in that part of the world" and that it's "OK, becuase it's better than what they had otherwise (nothing.)"

The hypocrisy of the right and the sense of entitlement of the conservative rich in this country never ceases to astound me.

Posted by NiceguyEddie

So don't -- you know, don't you tell me that as a nation we have failed because we don't live by Matthew.

I know.  I mean come on Barry!  Don't you know that only REPUBLICANS are allowed to talk about CHRISTIAN VALUES?!  (And even then only if jive with their PROSPERITY GOSPEL.)

/sarcasm.

God I hate these scumbags.
