O'Reilly guest host's comment on Chinese Olympic team: "I thought 'baby fat' was one of the Chinese volleyball players"

On the August 22 broadcast of The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly, in reference to allegations that the female gymnasts on the Chinese teamdid not meet Olympic age requirements, guest host Doug McIntyreaired a song that he said was "courtesy of WBAP, news talk out of Texas, a tribute -- amusical tribute to the Chinese Olympic team." The portion of the song aired by McIntyre includes the lyrics "[t]heysaid that you were too young, I thought that was your name." Seconds later, the song asked: "How do you hideyour baby fat? You can fake a passport, or do the twist, but you don'tseem to know how to drive." McIntyre commented, "I thought'baby fat' was one of the Chinese volleyball players."

Ahhhh,, harrumph...well, uhh, this is......

Lighten up MMFA.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to tommy

Oh yeah, that's right... justa joke.

Got it.

And if the tables were turned...

Posted by jeter2 in reply to RABBITLUVR

And if the tables were turned...

What exactly does that mean? Are you saying if the US Gymnastic Olympic team tried to pass off underage kids as 16 that no one could poke fun?

This song is making fun of the Chinese attempting to present underage kids as 16 year olds. What exactly do you find so offensive?

Too Young? Ever hear of Egg Foo Yong? Baby Fat? Ever watch Hawaii 5-0? Remember Wo Fat? It's probably just a play on those "names".

And the East Germans did try to pass off men as women [remember their state sponsored doping program] back during the Cold War era. And they did look more like men than women.

Please tell me why you find this song so offensive? If I'm missing something, I'm willing to hear what it is.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to jeter2

It's not that it's offensive (even though it is), it's that it's not funny.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to magnolialover

Exactly.

Jeter seems to think that if someone doesn't find a 'joke' funny then that person must be 'offended'.

For the record... I am not Chinese or Asian for that matter. I have no stake in this whatsoever. It just wasn't funny. It was dumb... along the lines of any so-called 'humor' uttered by rightwingers.

Posted by jeter2 in reply to RABBITLUVR

Rabbit you wrote:

Oh yeah, that's right... justa joke.

Got it.

And if the tables were turned...

If you weren't offended [because it sounded like you were by what you wrote] then what was your point? What do you mean about tables being turned? If the joke didn't tickle your funny bone, then why not just say so.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to jeter2

I already said the 'joke' wasn't funny. As far as the 'tables are turned' comment, see Deez's post and my response to it.

Posted by jeter2 in reply to RABBITLUVR

I know Rabbit, my point was why not just say the joke isn't funny, instead of asking : what if the tables were turned?  You obviously found it offensive, my question is why?

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to jeter2

That's your interpretation... you are flat-out wrong. Sorry.

Posted by foghornleghorn in reply to RABBITLUVR

I thought is was spelled "Baby Phat".

Posted by Governor in reply to jeter2

Jeter,

It's offensive because The O'Reilly Factor is supposed to be looking out for me.  They failed to look out for me here.  I feel swindled.

Posted by jeter2 in reply to magnolialover

It's not that it's offensive (even though it is), it's that it's not funny.

Mag,

It wasn't roll on the floor laughing funny, but it wasn't unfunny. And please tell me why you think it's offensive, because I just don't see it that way.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to jeter2

I just thought that it was offensive to Chinese people in general mostly because it plays to long dispelled stereotypes. That's all. I still don't even think it was funny, not even a small chuckle. And again, I'm not easily offended, it is just that if I'm going to be offended, I want to get a laugh out of it is all.

Posted by wookie in reply to magnolialover

It's offensive to fans of clever, unpredictable comedy.

Posted by deeznuts in reply to jeter2

Put it this way...

If a Chinese journalist went on TV and said something like "I'm surprised Americans can run or swim or do anything physical since they're all so overweight and unhealthy," would that be OK?

Frankly, I'm not remotely surprised this happened on O'Reilly.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to deeznuts

The rightwing would be outraged. I can hear it now...

'Oh, how DARE those ****** attack US red-blooded Americans!'

Posted by jeter2 in reply to deeznuts

Well Deez, too many Americans are overweight, which is unhealthy, so no I wouldn't care if someone, Chinese or whomever pointed that out. Nor would I care if they did a parody about it.

Posted by tommy in reply to deeznuts

I could care less, my skin isn't quite that thin, nor are my sensibilities so easily offended by something so utterly harmless and silly.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to tommy

Well, then you have thicker skin than those lonny talkers on your side. I mean... they go nuts over the slightest 'anti-American' slur - real or imagined.

Posted by anotheramerican in reply to RABBITLUVR

Rabbit,

Like finding yourself in quicksand, the more you defend a toss away line like you gave above, the more you sink.

Posted by sportsguydave in reply to anotheramerican

Projecting again, AA? The same could be said about pretty much every one of your posts ... :)

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to anotheramerican

Listen, dummy, the only people in the quicksand right now are McCain and his idiot supporters, including you. Christ, the man cannot even air a SINGLE ad promoting HIS agenda! Nope... just nothing but ads attacking Obama/Biden and now... scummy as it is... using Hillary to troll for votes. Can we say desperate?

Your man and your side have NOTHING. NOTHING to offer this country. All you can do is scrape the bottom of the barrel. That's it.

Now pull yourself out of that one.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

The phrase you're looking for is "I couldn't care less..."

Posted by tommy in reply to Governor

No, it's "I could care less", but I don't.

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

So why then do you care about this posted item?

Posted by magnolialover in reply to tommy

Actually, it's "couldn't". Why?

If you "could" care less, that means you actually have space left to "care" about whatever it is you're talking about.

If you "couldn't" care less, that means you have no space left to care about whatever it is you're talking about.

Sorry, it's one of my pet peeves that people get wrong all of the time.

Posted by Governor in reply to magnolialover

Prediction: Tommy will disagree.

Posted by tommy in reply to magnolialover

And how do you know how much "space" I have left to care about this?  I was correct the first time.  If you couldn't care less, it's all good...

(I can't believe we are even arguing over this)

Posted by Governor in reply to tommy

Right, So why do you care about this posted item?

Posted by commonsenseliberal in reply to magnolialover

Agreed: the phrase is, "I couldn't care less".  It's a pet peeve of mine too, when people don't get it right.  Same with there/they're/their, your/you're and to/two/too.

Saying that you could care less means just that - you care some, but you could care even less.  It makes no sense.

And yes, my entire education was public.  See, it's not that bad...

I'm not sure this has so much to do with thickness of skin as it does with color.

I mean what kind of dispicable low life adopts a colored child, shows her off like she's some kind of proof that you aren't another right wing racist, and then create a will that leaves that adopted child hardly anything compared to McCain's siblings?

Yeah...  I get it know...

Jokes based on racial stereotypes, even fairly clumsily constructed ones = FUNNY

Jokes demonstrating conservative hypocrisy or religiuous lunacy in a satirical, witty and yet logically consiustent manner = SACRILIGE

tommy,

I'll say it...it was falling down funny...along with being a big WITH.

Posted by NiceguyEddie in reply to wesley

Wes, you have no wit.

Tommy - racial stereotypes are misinformation that support the conservative agenda by feeding their xenophopbia and fears of anything remotely different from themselves.  They are lies told by conservatives, to conservatives.  THAT'S why it's here.

I wish you people would stop asking WITH so often.  I've asked it myself ONCE or TWICE, but you once-or-twice-a-weekers (sometimes every day!) are the ones getting ridiculous.

Posted by deeznuts in reply to NiceguyEddie

I came to the conclusion long ago that the reason "why this is here" is often precisely because people like TOMMY and SUEELD would ask.

MMFA is providing a service. And it looks like some of our resident wingnuts are in dire need of that service.

Posted by anotheramerican in reply to deeznuts

Deez,

MMFA is pushing is simply pushing it's agenda undercover. When the threads don't match the "mission statement" then you see the WITH pop ups.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to anotheramerican

But this does match their mission statement. Should we review it? Again?

Posted by Brabantio in reply to NiceguyEddie

What is the stereotype here?  That Chinese people are actually fat?  That "Fat" is a Chinese last name?  Or that the Chinese gymnastics team pushed underage girls into the competition?

The first I don't see at all, the second is true, and the third is a valid criticism.  I think there's too much WITH here, but this is a bad joke at worst as far as I'm seeing.

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

Why is this here? You're kidding, right, Tommy?

Right wing talkers are always yammering about how their critics unfairly accuse them of racism. You don't think this post might be here to document that Bill O'Reilly's radio show was given to a man who thought it would be funny to play a song that had no point other than to play on stereotypes about Chinese people?

The next time Bill O'Reilly claims that he doesn't traffic in racism and that he doesn't tolerate racism, remember how he handed his microphone over to this jackass.

Posted by tommy in reply to vysotsky

Whatever, if you're offended by something as ridiculous as this, then so be it.  The truth be known, it has little to do with being offended and everything to do with gotcha nonsense against someone opposed to your political ideology.  If this is you shining example of right wing racism, then go for it.  It's silly.

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

Who said I was offended?

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to vysotsky

Tommy's following in Jeter's footsteps on this one, I see.

I just love how righties think they can speak for our side. I mean, just amazing that psychic ability they must possess! ;)

Posted by tommy in reply to vysotsky

You were the one who accused this "jackass" of trafficking in racism, it only made sense that would offend you if you characterized it that way.

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

He's playing a silly song that plays on stereotypes about Chinese people. I think I can safely call him a jackass without being personally offended by what he's doing. And that's the point. Whether or not I'm offended has nothing do to with what he's doing, which is mocking an entire country for names that sound strange in English. If this were some obscure Morning Zoo radio show, it would be completely irrelevant to MMFA's work. But it's on O'Reilly's radio show, and O'Reilly argues that his critics unfairly accuse him of trafficking in racism. MMFA is documenting a case in which the host of his show played a song that had no purpose other than to mock Chinese names.

I'm not offended, and I wouldn't call this a 'shining example' of racism. But it's worth documenting an example of a flagrantly racist joke on a show that claims to have higher standards than it actually does.

Silly? You bet. And that's exactly the point, because O'Reilly and company claim to be above this sort of cheap racist humor.

Posted by tommy in reply to vysotsky

I know, I know, it violates every tenet of left wing political correctness; the real time 24/7 monitoring and "gotcha", finger wagging, schoolmarm mentality that exists today.

How did we as a country ever live without it?

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

I know, I know, what a horrible world it would be if people who made racist jokes actually acknowledged that they trafficked in racist jokes.

What's so hard about acknowledging that the guest host of Bill O'Reilly's show went out of his way to mock Chinese names? It's not even very offensive -- it's just mocking Chinese names. What's so hard about recognizing that, Tommy?

You're acting as if there's some reason that one might not want to acknowledge racist jokes when people make them. Now what would that reason be?

Posted by tommy in reply to vysotsky

If your subtly trying to accuse me of being a racist because my panties are not in a bunch over this harmless silly radio blather, be my guest Vy. You look foolish if that's the case.

Oh, and I couldn't care less.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to tommy

How about answering the questions asked of you for a change?

Posted by tommy in reply to RABBITLUVR

How about displaying your silly outrage to someone who's impressed.

Posted by RABBITLUVR in reply to tommy

Obviously you're 'impressed', otherwise you wouldn't be responding.

Anyway... once again, you are true to form. Dodging as always. :)

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

Good gravy, Tommy! I never accused you -- directly or indirectly -- of being racist, and I don't think you are racist!

And you claim that your skin isn't so thin, huh? Sheesh.

Let me be absolutely clear. We have here a case of a national radio show that claims to be above racism giving audience to a man who plays a song that does nothing other than mock a people for names that sound funny in English. And yet you take issue not with that hypocrisy, but with people who point out that hypocrisy.

Tommy, I don't think you're racist and I have no reason to believe that this guest host is racist. I just think that I've got pretty solid grounds for arguing that this song and this host's comments mocked Chinese people for their names, and that Bill O'Reilly claims that he and his show are above cheap racist jokes.

(Stop me when I've said something with which you disagree.)

I called the host a jackass, and that's because he's a grown man acting like a child for making jokes about how people from other places and cultures have names that sound strange.

I genuinely don't understand why you've taken issue with anything I've said.

Posted by tommy in reply to vysotsky

You are entitled to your opinion.  Mine is that I don't find this offensive, I don't find it racist, I don't find it anything but a silly irrelevant mildly humorous dumb joke by a radio talker.  It pokes fun at a Chinese name, so what.  It pokes fun at their alleged underage gymnasts, so what.  It's a play on words that is harmless and totally unworthy of over 100+ posts about it.  I accept my responsibility in furthering this thread discussion on something so absolutely idiotic as highlighting this throwaway line, as AA aptly put it.  I have said my piece, if you don't agree or accept it, so be it.

And if I unjustly accused you of accusing me of racism, I apologize.

Posted by vysotsky in reply to tommy

"It pokes fun at a Chinese name, so what."

I think that's exactly my point, Tommy. It's silly. It's juvenile. The joke boils down to, "Those people sure are different! Even their names sound weird! Ha!" It's not a horribly offensive slur, and I don't claim that it is.

But Bill O'Reilly claims that his show isn't a forum for racism. And yet when MMFA documents that it is, MMFA is greeted by people who argue, "Hey, he's just having a little fun! Why so thin skinned?"

Let me say again for the record: I don't think you're racist. And I agree -- this is nothing more than a bad joke that "pok[es] fun at a Chinese name." But that is the very definition of mocking a people for nothing other than being different. I don't even think there's anything wrong with doing that in some contexts, but in this case, this is a show that claims to have higher standards and claims that its critics falsely accuse it of catering to racial and ethnic stereotypes.

(Apology gratefully accepted, by the way. Thank you.)

Americans= arrogant, childish, racist, sexist, defensive and VERY offensive. The American superiority complex. Say and do what you want and if/when you offend or hurt someone, justify it by attacking. Never shut your mouths and think from a different perspective. Perpetuate the arrogance, childishness, racism, sexism, because after all, that is what Americans stand for and the nation was built on. Stand proud America in all your glory because should anyone suggest that one of yours, in stupid humor or not, is being offensive to another nation's children, remember you don't have to think or feel, just DEFEND your own and ATTACK others. Decency to children is something you people don't understand. That must be why you allow child molestation and child abuse to be commonplace... ah! Make a song.... find the humor.
