Media don't challenge false claim that Obama vacationed on a "private beach in Hawaii"

Summary: Several media outlets have uncritically reported the false charge by Sen. John McCain's campaign that Sen. Barack Obama "just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii." In fact, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Resources, all beaches in Hawaii are public.

Boy, no wonder Ike's granddaughter just left the republican party to join the democrats. Innoccuous John and Adultery model Cindy just got proven to be the elitists so once again they have to resort to saying anything to get elected.

Posted by Science101 in reply to snoopy

And nothing says "I'm not elite" like a $4M yearly income and a $1.6M mansion, right?

Posted by loonz in reply to Science101

Who has a yearly income of 4M dollars?

Posted by open_mind in reply to loonz

You are right.  Obama hasn't made that kind of money every year - as the word "yearly" would imply.  Obama is only newly wealthy.  He isn't (Cindy) McCain rich by any means.  John McCains allowance is probably more than what Obama makes in a year.

Posted by rjc in reply to Science101

I'm confused. Isn't that what conservatives claim we should all aspire to? I find it interesting that conservatives consistently deride the people who actually embody the principles conservatives claim to hold.

CLASS WARFARE!!  CLASS WARFARE!!!

Posted by snoopy in reply to Science101

Yeah, he's soooo elite with his one house and an income that he worked for. He shoulda been like Innoccuos John and married into his wealth.

Posted by IRONY 101 in reply to Science101

...$4M yearly income and a $1.6M mansion, right?

A mere pittance to the former POW, John McCain, and Cindy McCain, the wife of the former POW.

You use the "Former POW" phrase to an extreme on here, in most of what you post lately. John McCain may be a former POW, but I fear you will never be a "former jackass"..  you seem to have that as a lifetime entitlement.

MissDee, I know this is an anonymous-posting websit, but still... don't you ever get embarrassed about posting such consistent nothingness?

I beg to differ...I am simply following the example of the former POW, John McCain, who believes there is no such thing as pointing out his former POW status too often. But, of course, as a former POW John McCain doesn't like to talk about it. He just likes pandering for votes, my friend...

Posted by my4cents1172 in reply to Science101

How about 4,7-10 of those mansions, $500 shoes, and a wife you can publicly call c**t?

Posted by SFnomad in reply to my4cents1172

... priceless

Posted by BottleBlonde in reply to Science101

He doesn't have a $4 million dollar yearly income. He made a lot from his recent book. That's like a bonus, not a salary or income from investments!

Posted by MissDee in reply to BottleBlonde

if he made it, it's income. I can see why dems can claim a tax cut to the people they want to tax to death with that logic.

Posted by mefirst in reply to MissDee

who denied that it was "income"?  the statement was: it's not yearly income.  in other words, he doesn't get that amount every year.  seems simple, but you're the one who had obama claiming that if we inflated our tires and got tuneups we would have "no dependence on foreign oil".  he made no such statement, implied or otherwise.

Posted by DAWUSS in reply to snoopy

But Johnnie Mac is a POW, so I guess you could say he deserves his status.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year and bought his $1 million mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?"

Answer: "Yes"

Posted by zamfir273114

All I can say is that no matter who the politician was, it would be annoying with they vacationed at the beach that I was vacationing at. Think of all the crowds, the secret service, the security, the cars etc etc. Of course I am not blaming Obama for this, I am just saying that if McCain wanted to attack Obama he would have created a story about how many people were "inconvenienced" by Obama's presence.

Posted by zamfir273114 in reply to zamfir273114

P.S. Bush does it all the time. He shows up places and it is chaotic.

Posted by snoopy in reply to zamfir273114

But as a former POW, McCain doesn't have time to think of things that make sense and are based in truth. As a former POW he's got his work cut out for him living off of his 2nd wife's inheritance while he tells everyone he meets that as a former POW he is the most qualified to lead the country because of his former POW status. As a former POW he's just the kind of guy us middle class Americans want to have a beer with - I mean, who could turn down having a beer with a former POW who is running for president? Heck, I can see why as a former POW he buys $500 loafers. They probably feel real comfortable on his former POW feet.

Posted by MissDee in reply to snoopy

I see you'll never achieve "former" jackass status either...

Posted by princeofwheels in reply to MissDee

Can't have a former and a present jackass like maybe, you!!! I am the POW around here and I will follow that other POW John McCain and introduce my POW status everytime someone proves I am wrong.

Will you agree that a yearly salary means you get that ever year? Can't say it any slower. And really, if he did make 4 mil a year, why would he take this cut in pay? Ego or dedication to his country?

To stay on topic, Rush said that he was on a private beach marked "Blacks Only"......I lied..but Rush may have thought that.

Posted by snoopy in reply to MissDee

Perhaps you should take your complaint up with the former POW John McCain who is running for president as a former POW. In fact, John McCain, the former POW, has not only used his status as a former POW to excuse every single infidelity, campaign gaffe and outright lie as being excuseable because he's a former POW, he's used his status as a former POW to spend his etire inside the beltway career running as a former POW. But what did you expect from a self serving egotist who's entire career can be summed up by the excuse that he's a former POW? So Dee, if you don't like hearing over and over that McCain, the former POW uses the label "former POW" like it's crack in a candy store, I suggest you call the former POW's office and tell McCain, the former POW, to stop abusing his status as a former POW for political cover-up. Because being a former POW has nothing to do with his shady life, poor memory and highly suspect lobbying for the country of Georgia.

Posted by IRONY 101

As a former prisoner of war John McCain favors air strikes on the "private" beach where Barack Obama and his family were vacationing. McCain, the former POW, was quoted as saying that Obama "should stay in America next time and not go vacationing in some foreign country."

Posted by jawill11 in reply to IRONY 101

Even though he vacationed in a foreign country once......FOR FIVE AND A HALF YEARS!

Posted by mefirst

most areas have the same rules.  the high tide mark is public access.  above the mark is private, unless it's public property.  but the question is so what?  if you go to a hotel on the beach,  that's a "private beach".  this is a pretty weak argument by the mccain camp.  nitpicking at it's height.

I talked to a friend of mine who lives in Manoa Valley and he said Obama presented NO problems wherever he went. When he went body surfing at Sandy Beach (I've been there and it's the best) no one was prevented from body surfing with him. Granted they were very carefully watched by Roger said he was more than welcome back anytime.

 The locals love him.

BY the way what is with this four mil A YEAR income?  I was under the impression that was just for the last year due to book sales NOT sucking off of his wife's alcohol money.

I guess IF the 527's REALLY wanted to get nasty they could go after the beer dealership and how many people have died as a result of her family's death merchant status selling alcohol which causes fatal accidents and overdoses?

IF they really wanted to show how low they could go.

But claiming they are attacking Cindy because John is just...what...a gigolo?

Posted by peebs755

Irony101, thats hilarious!

Posted by peebs755

Oh yeah. To science010 4 mil is MUCH more elitist than 100 mil. I guess by that time its just ho-hum and gets boring. So its not elitist anymore.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to peebs755

I think I mentioned this already in a post here, but the McCain camp's response to Obama's ad about Grampy not knowing how many houses he had was hilarious. They lashed out with the Hawaiian vacation and arugala to portray Obama as the elite-ier.

I know very solid blue-collar workers who have saved up and vacationed in Hawaii. I know middle-class and working -class people who have not only ordered something with arugula in a restaurant, but have served it to me in their homes.

I don't know anybody personally who can't tell me how many homes they own. I guess I hang out with a bunch of loser super-elitists.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

I think that this is the thing that bothers me the most. Arugula is elitist? Huh? Did I miss something? It's a basic salad green. Has been for a long time. McCain can't answer a question about how many homes he has? Now that's pretty elite if you ask me. Obama has one house. Sure, it's a nice expensive one, bought with money he earned through his book sales, and his wife's high dollar job no doubt. But John McCain can't tell you how many homes he has? How many houses? Are you freakin' kidding me?

And vacationing in Hawai'i is not exotic or elitist. Hell, I went to Hawai'i when I was in college for Spring Break. I, wasn't rich, by any stretch. But you know, I worked a crappy job, saved some money, and got to go on a nice trip. Same holds true for other folks around the country.
This matters? Why?

Posted by deanoakwood

Great point Col!

My mom is a part-time dental hygentist and some friends and her saved up money and spent a week in Hawaii.  Guess my Mom is a super elitist!

Posted by catfish1968

I live in Hawaii (Maui, to be exact). Beach access is public, everywhere. It doesn't matter if it is low tide, or high tide. Secondly, there aren't any private beaches in Hawaii and in fact, are illegal and would be protested to high heaven. Thirdly, you can grow just about any kind of salad green for about $1.49, in the form of a seed packet. With some soil and water, anyone can grow salad greens. It is far from elitist. Oh, and it tastes good. Must we deny ourselves fresh vegetables because it's not "authentic enough?" Is canned vegetables (or packaged foods) somehow more American that fresh food? And if so, how the heck did we get to this conclusion?

Posted by princeofwheels in reply to catfish1968

Fish, Where do you think the "CON" in ""CON"clusion comes from? But to answer you. This conclusion comes from a very dark and dismal place. From the minds of the misguided Republicans who have let the Cons steal their party.
