Media denounce Corsi's anti-Obama book

Summary: Many in the media are challenging Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation, noting its numerous falsehoods and its author's track record. Their reaction stands in stark contrast to coverage of Corsi's 2004 book, Unfit for Command. The media were sharply criticized for taking too long to challenge that book's numerous smears and falsehoods.

And yet Corsi is still being invited for interviews and debates.

I heard some of the Fox clowns talking about the Corsi book. I think it was Colmes who mentioned that there were piles of discredited assertions in the book. None of the conservatives contested this, they even agreed that there were lies in the book but one suggested that Democrats were scared that the public was "learning" about Obama.

Welcome to Planet Wingnut. "receiving false information"= "learning".

The only reason the book wasn't an instant hit in wingnutland is it wasn't a pop-up.

and there were no crayons or magic markers included.

But this time, in many cases, the media response has been a "swift" kick to its credibility.

I certainly don't hold my breath that this will last..... but I think the corporate owned sections of the rightwing media are beginning to realize that the ground swell in this country of We the People is bigger and more mad as hell that has not been seen since the election of FDR!

The next two months or so will most assuredly prove beyond any left over doubt that FoxNoise is truely nothing more than a propaganda mouthpiece for the Republican party and that the Republican party is most certainly NOT the party of the people!

I sense a landslide victory for the brown guy with the funny sounding name coming this Nov.....

Mary Matalin, who appears regularly on mainstream media programs like Meet the Press called the Corsi book "a piece of scholarship, and a good one at that."

What a piece of sh!t you mean, and a darned good piece of sh!t that will make her money.

The depths the righties will go to..... they all need to be taught a lesson, and losing the next couple of elections hopefully will teach the responsible righties to kick these losers to the curb.

Posted by snoopy in reply to BottleBlonde

OT, but I was a little disappointed today. I found out that CNN Newsroom had a chryon that asked "Is Obama the anti-christ?" so I sent the hint in. I thought I'd take AA's "advice" and not take a thread OT, and ... nothing. And he wonders why it happens periodically? Brock needs more interns...

Mary Matalin runs the imprint that's publishing Obama Nation.

Posted by lapsedlawyer in reply to clams casino

And is married to James Carville, who (along with George Stephanopolous) ran Bill Clinton's campaign in '92.  I think that reflects more on Carville than on Matalin.

She also used to work for V.P. Dick Cheney...which should tell you all you need to know about her.

This is a very exciting election year. The really juicy stuff hasn't even come out against Obama yet. Priceless :)

Posted by snoopy in reply to zamfir273114

Really juicy stuff = right wing lies and smears. Why don't you and your racist buddies just come out and call him a n****r already? It's quite obvious that y'all are just dying to...

Posted by fawltylogic in reply to snoopy

Well that Cesspool show will probably do it soon enough. Maybe Corsi can go on there a few more times and associate himself into oblivion.

Posted by zamfir273114 in reply to snoopy

The only people that seem to be obsessed with that nasty N word are people like yourself. I despise that word and literally cringe every time I hear anyone say it.

Posted by Leftwingcenter in reply to zamfir273114

But when you say it, that's okay, though, right Zammie?...

Posted by zamfir273114 in reply to Leftwingcenter

I would be scared to say that word. There is way too much emotion and vitriol associated with that word. Seriously, a white person uttering that stupid word is like suicide.

Posted by IRONY 101 in reply to zamfir273114

Well, Zammie... what exactly is the priceless juicy stuff to which you allude? Or is this simply typical right wing wishful thinking that elections are won by how many nasty lies you can spread about your opponent?

Posted by annes10 in reply to zamfir273114

Posted by annes10 in reply to annes10

Real reptiles really really don't like McCain. They are waiting and hoping they might really Really REALLY like his VP choice. Otherwise, they are looking at voting for pretty much of a .... liberal republican. HOLD YOUR NOSES and GET DOWN TO THE BUSINESS OF PROMOTING MCCAIN, YOU REPTILES!

I'm not speaking only on my behalf, I heard this on Rush today, for as much truth as you might expect from THAT!

Obama vs. McCain, the juice is sweet for the democrats this election cycle! How can we lose! ha Ha HaHAHA!

Posted by unitarianpatriot in reply to zamfir273114

Zamfir buddy, there's a reason why your stuff is "not available in stores," which means it's even worse than Mr. Corsi's stuff, and it's pretty rank. Watch where you shove that pan flute!

Posted by zamfir273114 in reply to unitarianpatriot

Atleast you're original. Bravo :)

It's amazingly gratifying to see the media do its job for once. To see right-wing lies denounced in the media is pretty rare these days.

Posted by JD in reply to fawltylogic

I tell you what, if these new books had different authors or different publishers as Unfit For Command, then we might not be so lucky.  Because it's the SAME AUTHOR, this is like a softball for the media.

The media should not be patting themselves on the back for this one, like they inevitably will.  If there were different authors involved, we'd be hearing the same thing like we heard from Post editor Leonard Downie, Jr. in '04:   "We are not judging the credibility of Kerry or the (Swift Boat) Veterans, we just print the facts.

Posted by truthseeker77

yet liberals have the balls to claim that the media wants McCain to win.

Posted by zamfir273114 in reply to truthseeker77

And anytime anyone says anything opposing Barack Obama in these threads, he/she is deemed a racist. That is that all about? To me, Obama is not black OR white...he is BOTH (which should be a good thing). I just don't like his policies (the few things we DO know about him).

Posted by steeve in reply to zamfir273114

Dude, you endorsed Corsi. Stop playing "reasonable voter".

Posted by friedbergboy1422 in reply to zamfir273114

TruthSeeker77, and Zamfir, what do you make of this media study done by a guy held up by both O'Reilly and Glenn Beck:

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-onthemedia27-2008jul27,0,712999.story

Posted by steeve in reply to friedbergboy1422

Seriously, media studies are nearly always worthless, even when they're on your side. Their methods are nonsensical and poorly and incompletely explained.

For instance, that study covered only network evening newscasts, which made a grand total of 60 judgments on the candidates during the entire study. A single episode of O'Reilly or Olbermann is enough to drown out the entire study.

Posted by magnolialover in reply to truthseeker77

They are.

If the media actually does its job, and dismembers this book, then somehow they are pro-Obama? Or, in this case, are they actually looking at this piece of trash subjectively and judging it on its content and merits? It's not the media's fault that Corsi prints all the lies and misinformation. I'm glad to see some in the media taking this seriously, and it does appear that they learned something from ignoring his other hit job book on Kerry, as in, you can't trust anything that flows from Corsi's pen.

Posted by Buzzramjet

I rarely EVER see anyone call an anti Obama person racist UNLESS the person used terms that are identified as rascist.

But what I really like is that Zam is the person this book is aimed. The non stop comments about (we don't really know anything about him...shhh, whisper whisper, pass it on).

I'm surprised you come here since you obviously belong on conspiracy blogs Zam.

Think about it. With ALL the information out there and you know the Thug party is working over time going through his trash, finding every written record and talking to ANYONE who even walked past him looking for dirt and YET YOU actually believe there is the real hidden Obama agenda and you are one of the few chosen ones to know about it.

Lordy but deliver us from such.

Posted by unitarianpatriot

If the NY Times wanted to have some fun while making a point and defending the truth, it would put this book on its fiction list.

Posted by mary59 in reply to unitarianpatriot

The NYT should have a Yellow Journalism list to put in on. Ann Coulter would have a perfect home there.

Posted by puttforever4682

Corsi will be on C-span this morning so he gets to spread  his misinformation just about anywhere.  This allows him to spew his garbage probably without any real challenges.

Posted by KATHLENEC9402

I cannot believe anyone would believe the trash that is being touted

in this book! Well, anyone with intelligence would not, they would

consider the source and how desperate the republican party is.

American voters are too smart to give any substance to this piece

of trash. We have seen it before and realize that Mccain and his party have no accomplishments to run on so all they can resort to is dirty politics.

Another four years of Mccain/Bush/Cheny/Rove. NO WAY!!

Unfortunately, this is a preaching to the choir book. For months on end, these guys who have been attacking Obama about things that aren't true and spreading their little tid bits of misinformation, and maybe even sending out mass e-mails here and there (you all know the ones of which I speak of, the ones your relatively nice co-workers forward to you). The people who are going to buy this book, and believe what is in it, are the folks who don't like to think for themselves, and wonder why these charges and "facts" don't seem to sound quite right. They'll lick it up, and it will also give them justification for their forwarding of this misinformation, because it's in a book, written by a guy with a fancy degree, from a fancy university, so how can it be wrong? That's the sort of weight that Corsi can hold actually. Harvard is a well respected institution, and honestly, they don't just hand out PhDs to just anyone. It does actually take a certain high level of intelligence, and drive to get a PhD, and from Harvard, I would think even more, which lends weight to Corsi. It's just too bad that he's using his credentials to write such tripe, misinformation, lies, and distortions. I'm certain that his right wing masters are indeed paying him well. I wouldn't be surprised to see a big check from Richard Mellon Scaife in his bank account, among others. I mean, for example. Look at Brock, who started this site. He used to get paid to write misinformation and lies, and then try to sell it off as truth. Why wouldn't someone else be doing it?

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to magnolialover

Mag, I've shoehorned my way onto a co-workers email list, and recently got this email. Apparently, some of our fellow Americans would love to have a president who is a combination of macho, mentally impaired, and prone to being vindictive towards other nations who don't obey him, no matter how wrong he is.

Posted by fawltylogic in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

Unfortunately, I think the number is greater than "some". There are lots of people who believe in violent solutions to everything.

Posted by albertsenj in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

Aren't a LOT of the countries which will end up on list 2 MAJOR oil exporters? What will happen if we follow the policies this particular group of wingnuts recommends?

Posted by magnolialover in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

Yeah, that would be a "great" thing to do, those things listed on said e-mail. I can't believe the junk that I see on a daily basis. I don't tell anyone I work with that I'm liberal, just so that I can get their craziness forwarded to my e-mail inbox.

See, what these a-holes seem to forget is that, believe it or not, we need other countries around the world. We need China. We need our NATO allies. It's not the 18th century, where we could more or less go it alone (after getting bailed out by France of course).

This e-mail you posted is but one example of the high level of stupidity of some folks, and their understanding of how things actually work in the world. The best bit in the e-mail is about how not sending foreign aid would pay for the cost of Iraq in less than a year. Wow! Talk about an understatement. Foreign aid per year, is about 22 billion. A good amount, but the cost of the war is (projected): 2.4 trillion, by some accounts. Most agree that it's going to be "more than" 1 trillion dollars.

About Swiftboating. If it was allowed for Kerry, why not use it on McCain? During a Hannity live interview of McCain: Concerning McCain’s admission to signing a war criminal confession under pressure                     Hannity said:“You signed statements that you confessed to be a war criminal.” He is referring to McCain’s signing statements against the United States while a POW.  McCain says:“I failed myself, my fellow prisoners, and my family, and my country.” In other words he betrayed his country. Some POWs even claim that McCain was never tortured and that he collaborated with the communist Vietnamese using propaganda against the United States. I won’t go into the details of this issue. Googling will provide a broader picture. My point is why more isn’t being done to exploit this false hero myth and expose this treason. Kerry did not do anything very serious and was demolished for it. McCain would be accused of something far more serious, namely the betrayal of his country under pressure and collaborating with the enemy.

Why are there no hate filled left wing radio talk show hosts with millions of brain-washed listeners?   Because most progressives. liberals etc do not openly embrace lies and hate speech.  You should ANSWER the lies, but do not copy their despicable methods.

Posted by rl_benjamin4691

While it's important that network and cable anchors and reporters correctly point out Corsi's racism and general dishonesty, it's MORE important that they kick Mary Mataliin out of their cozy little club.  Mataln is a two-bit right-wing flack whose presence on any talk show cheapens it

 zamfir273114,

"I just don't like his policies (the few things we DO know about him). -"

What don't we know about him? Feel free to elaborate.

Col. Harlan Sanders,

"On that note, a word to terrorist organizations:
Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth."

Tell your friends 9/11 was seven years ago and ask how is Bin Laden doing? I'm sure the world's terrorists are just shaking in their boots at the thought of our "swift" justice.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to robrob

Hey Rob2,

I sometimes "reply all" to these emails, but it tends to get me cut out of the following ones, until I can sneak into my co-workers office and add myself.

I watched the forum tonight, Obama & Grampy at a megachurch in my county.McCain vowed to get Bin Laden if he has to follow him "to the gates of hell".

I think he meant he'd send somebody else's kids.

Posted by neondesert in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

That would be one heck of a chase - Bin Laden dragging his dialysis machine and Grampy on his scooter, both racing for the gates.  But what happens if Bin Laden gets there first and goes outside?  Will McSame be allowed to follow him, or will the neocon powers-that-be keep him inside for fear that, once out, he'd forget how to get back?

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to robrob

Just for the record, Robrob's quote attributed to me is from the wingnut email  I linked to. Don't want any confusion there.

Posted by TrueDemocrat4377

Maybe instead of the personal attacks on Corsi we should actually discuss some of the arguments that the author made in his book?

Posted by jeremy

Is there any point to Campbell Brown's show on CNN other than giving legitimacy to any right-wing hack that says something stupid?  According to her logic, as long as enough people believe something, we must take it into serious consideration, regardless of the fact that it's wrong!  So Jerome Corsi is #1 on the bestseller list...the book is still nothing more than a hatchet job.  The media may be trying to display some sense of "outrage" but it ultimately does little more than feed into right-wing paranoia that the media will defend the left.  Of course, it is August, and a little war between Russia and Georgia just can't alleviate a slow news month like it used to...
