Wash. Times uncritically repeated McCain campaign's statement that Obama "voted in lockstep with President George W. Bush nearly half the time"

Summary: A Washington Times article uncritically repeated an assertion by Sen. John McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds that "[i]n the Senate, Barack Obama has voted in lockstep with President George W. Bush nearly half the time" and did not mention that, according to Congressional Quarterly, McCain voted with the Bush administration 95 percent of the time in 2007 and has voted with Bush 90 percent of the time over the course of Bush's presidency.

Obama voted in lockstep? Heck, I worry that Exxon John's neck will snap whenever Bush sits down!

Grampy McSame attempting to claim that Obama is more in lock step with Bush in voting is a lot like Bush and Rice having the balls to go in front a camera and say with a straight face that soveriegn nations dont invade other soveriegn nations in the 21st century without cause.

How these corporate rightwing thinking thugs survive on a daily basis is amazing!

There is something seriously wrong with Voted in lockstep nearly half the time.

You're right, too funny......

Posted by mefirst in reply to SFnomad

voted in half lockstep.

Posted by tommy in reply to mefirst

Would that like "popping" and "locking"?

Posted by Kyle_Broflovski in reply to mefirst

Or one of my favorite Colbert-isms:

Obama did vote in lockstep with George W. Bush.  Just... not most of the time!

Voted in lockstep half the time?

Um, is that even possible?  Apparently Team MCCain is no longer satisfied with mangling facts, they have now also decided to take aim at the meaning of words.

So Obama votes with Bush less than half the time and he's in "lock-step" with him.  McCain votes with Bush 95% of the time and he's a maverick.  Seems to me all McCain has succeeded in showing is that Obama has a mind of his own and doesn't vote a straight party line.  Interesting line of attack.

How sad is it when you have to resort to smearing your opponent by saying they voted with the president from your very own party.

Posted by steeve in reply to tommy

Pretty sad, but not nearly sad enough to get the Bush-lovers and supply-siders to change votes.

I just don't know who's more pathetic anymore - McCain or the Obama hating press...

I thought Obama was the "most liberal" senator.  It seems the McCain campaign can't make up its mind.

Posted by mefirst

you have to wonder what the half is.

Considering Bush and McCain attempted to take credit for a lot of democratic initiatives like the new vet bill, I'm sure those non republican bills were "factored" into the equation.

Posted by puttforever4682

It makes the democrat's job harder when a certain percentage of voters(those who read the Washington Times and watch Fox news) are automatically on the republican side, No amount of facts or moral suasion will overcome this. Now that the So Called Liberal Media has joined in the misinformation campaign(Cokie Roberts, Bob Schieffer, Dana Milbank to name a few, The task For Obama is much harder despite President Bush (the worst president ever imho.

Obama may want to take his half lockstep and try out for the Ministry of Silly Walks.

I mean, the left leg isn't silly at all and the right leg merely does a four dare O'Brian half turn every alternate step.

Glad someone's old enough to get it.

I would guess at least half the bills which go through Congress are non-controversial bills which pass more or less unanimously. Are these the bills which make Obama in lockstep with Bush? If over half the Congress did not vote for measures the President signs the government would grind to a halt very quickly.

Posted by steeve

Why didn't McCain just say Obama votes with Bush 100% of the time? It's not like he'll have to back it up.

The media will spend 1000 hours discussing how such an attack plays politically, and 0 hours discussing whether it's true or not.

As I think a couple of other people have said. How can Obama be the MOST liberal Senator, and yet still be voting with Bush half of the time? Is this sort of like how he's a dirty Muslim, and a black Christian separatist all at the same time? At least if they could, you know, make up just one lie, and stick with that, that would be helpful. Apparently, they can't even decide if he's the most liberal, or if he voted with Bush, just more flip flops from the right hand side of the country.

Let's see...he's a non-gun toting terrorist sympathiser Muslim Christian going to a radical church and is anti-coffee and an exotic too-skinny elitist.

And he vacations in elite, exotic, Hawai'i.
