Wash. Post reported voter's concern that Obama "will raise taxes" without noting Obama proposes cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families

Summary: A Washington Post article on young evangelical voters stated that one such voter is "leaning toward [Sen. John] McCain because she shares his economic views and is afraid that [Sen. Barack] Obama will raise taxes," but did not note that Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families, or that McCain's own chief economic adviser has reportedly said it is inaccurate to say that "Barack Obama raises taxes."

This is the meme we will be hearing from now until after Obama is installed into office in January 2009. Obama is going to raise your taxes. Well, if you make a good load of money, he'll raise your taxes, but for regular folks, you're going to get more in your paycheck. They seem to forget that part.

This is a disingenuous thread by MMFA.  The girl being interviewed does not specify on whom she is afraid Obama will raise taxes on, so for the article's author to say "she shares his economic views and is afraid that Obama will raise taxes", she could very well be against tax hikes of any kind, on anyone.

Posted by Science101 in reply to tommy

Yes, they are making a very direct assertion, even though she doesn't actually specify.  Something MMFA often calls out others for.

Posted by snoopy in reply to tommy

She could also be taking her "shared views" directly off of McCain's lying ads. But I don't believe MM said the girl claimed that Obama would raise taxes on everyone, but instead said that the post did not provide proper context in their piece. I.E. the statement was left to stand on it's own.

If the girl had specified raising taxes on everyone, and the author let it go, then MMFA might have a case for misinformation.  For them to read her mind and assume that is what she meant is sloppy and without merit.

Posted by pete592 in reply to tommy

Who does McCain specify when he says in his commercials that Obama is going to raise taxes?

Posted by tommy in reply to pete592

It doesn't matter.  The girl being interviewed says she is concerned about Obama raising taxes.  She very well could be concerned about any tax raises in this economy.  I know that is totally wacko to a liberal, but it is some people's view Pete.  MMFA, and you, are jumping to the conclusion that she means raising taxes on lower income earners, where there is no evidence of that, irrespective of McCain's recent ads.  This is a weak thread by MMFA, in my opinion.

Brittany Kelley said herself she shares McCain's economic views.

It is McCain's view, an economic one, that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes.

Brittany Kelley believes that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes.

"Brittany Kelley believes that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes"

Thank you, please find out from Miss Kelley what her future plans are after she graduates, obviously you know her well enough to know what she "believes".

Posted by pete592 in reply to tommy

She didn't say what her plans are, only what her views are.

Her view is that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes.

Posted by tommy in reply to pete592

Got it, did you discuss global warming, or the war, or was it just her views on taxes that you guys talked over?

Posted by pete592 in reply to tommy

I'm making a very simple deduction based upon the stated personal views of two people.  Try to keep up.

Brittany Kelly's views are McCain's views.  How do I know this?  She said so.

McCain's view is that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes.  How do I know this?  He said so.

Therefore, Brittany Kelly's view is that Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes.

Posted by tommy in reply to pete592

McCain's view on taxes is raising them is not a good idea.  Brittany agrees with McCain's views on taxes.  Brittany's view is that raising taxes are a bad idea and Obama has proposed raising taxes, has he not?  No misinformation.

Posted by pete592 in reply to tommy

McCain's view is also that Obama will raise everyone's taxes.

Posted by snoopy in reply to tommy

In the same context I think you may be reading into the story. Why is she afraid Obama will raise taxes if she isn't making more than $200,000 a year? I agree the press in general has been quite lazy, but aren't you being just a tad too demanding on how thorough you expect them to be?

Posted by tommy in reply to snoopy

" Why is she afraid Obama will raise taxes if she isn't making more than $200,000 a year?"

Huh?  I am concerned about any tax raise and for the record, I do not make more than $200,000.

Posted by snoopy in reply to tommy

Well, I'm concerned about all those corporations who aren't paying any taxes as the tax burden gets pushed off onto the middle class.

Posted by tommy in reply to snoopy

I don't want anyone unfairly taxed, or taxed too much, or not paying their fair share.  The whole system needs a rehaul, but that is another topic.

Posted by Science101 in reply to snoopy

Why is she afraid Obama will raise taxes if she isn't making more than $200,000 a year?

Im concerned with any and all tax increases.  As with anything, if you let someone get away with a little bit...they will push, and push, and push even further.

Any chance of letting reality sneak in here? Like with how raising taxes worked in real life, and cutting taxes on the rich did not work in real life?

Posted by pete592 in reply to snoopy

If she's graduating from art school, she has a snowball's chance in hell of making $200k per year.

Posted by snoopy

I like the note about "hushed tones". It's like she was about to say "I'm not a racist, but some of my best friends are."

Posted by peebs755

No Tommy, she said she shared McCains economic views. If she does, and there's no reason to doubt her as I can see, then she knows exactly who will pay more in taxes.

Posted by tommy in reply to peebs755

Exactly, she shares McCain's economic views, where, at this moment, he is against raising taxes on anyone.

Posted by RoberttheP in reply to tommy

Very true, but apparently MMFA does not like anyone sharing McCains view. Bad thread.

Posted by worrierking in reply to RoberttheP

McCain's had so many views it's hard to keep track.

He's sided with just about everyone except Karl Marx at one time or another.

Posted by tommy in reply to worrierking

I don't disagree with that at all.

Posted by steeve in reply to RoberttheP

MMFA doesn't like anyone reporting on McCain without openly laughing at him in their columns.

If your reporting has any connection with reality, you will laugh McCain off the stage anytime he says anything.

Posted by BottleBlonde in reply to RoberttheP

Very true, but apparently MMFA does not like anyone sharing McCains view. Bad thread.

That's crazy talk. They don't like conservative misinformation.

It's conservative misinformation to relay this young person's opinion without saying that that opinion isn't based in reality. It furthers the conservative agenda, the part of that agenda which claims that Obama wants to or will raise taxes on people because he'll let the Bush tax cuts expire.

But he won't just let the Bush tax expire. He's going to also introduce tax breaks for the people earn the least amount of money. Those two things combined will not raise taxes on most people.

Posted by pete592 in reply to tommy

It is also McCain's view that Obama will raise everyone's taxes.

First, Not every news story needs to present all things related to a particular issue. For example, if the story is that Sen. Obama flew to Florida for vacation it does need to mention that the plane he took required maintenance when it arrived or that it may have been a plane at one time involved in an FAA related incident. Furthermore the story would not have to say anything about his destinations history, etc. The story that was being reported was why certain Evangelical voters did not support Obama not what his actual positions were.

Second, if you are going to lower taxes you should lower taxes for everyone. I have long been a supporter of a flat tax. It is the fairest across the board. Specifically the Armey Shelby Plan or H.R. 1040.

Third, anyone who claims support for the middle class should be an ardent un-waivering supporter of the Liberty Ammendment (http://www.libertyamendment.com/).

Posted by BottleBlonde in reply to insaneloki20024664

If the fact that her opinion is not based on reality is not mentioned, then it is conservative misinformation that forwards the conservative agenda.

MSM sources aren't supposed to forward any political agenda. Media Matters watches when the conservative agenda is being furthered by information from the media.

Posted by steeve in reply to insaneloki20024664

I don't really understand the liberty amendment, but one question can immediately get to the bottom of any big conservative idea:

Will millions of poor people suffer greatly if it is enacted?

If by some miracle the answer is "no", let's talk.

Do I have it right that the government will run mostly on corporate taxes if it's enacted? That doesn't sound very republican.

Posted by insaneloki20024664 in reply to steeve

First, I never claimed to be a Republican.

Second, If you read the entire page it explains how the government will be financed. It takes away burden from the people and from companies to allosw independent government.
