Hume falsely claimed Obama's half brother told The Jerusalem Post that Obama had a "Muslim background"

Summary: On Special Report, Brit Hume stated that Malik Obama, Sen. Barack Obama's half brother, "tells The Jerusalem Post that 'if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background.' " In fact, the article to which Hume was apparently referring indicated that Malik Obama did not speak directly with the Post but, rather, gave an interview to Israel's Army Radio. Moreover, nowhere in audio of the interview that ABC's Jake Tapper posted did Malik Obama assert that Obama "will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background."

This is really disgusting journalism. Hume was pretty sloppy.  He needs to issue another retraction.

Posted by august west in reply to open_mind

Hume was merely following the Fox agenda of morphing the online smear campaign into the television smear campaign.

Posted by kromecom48 in reply to open_mind

A retraction isn't enough. Hume and Fox are resurrecting and fueling a completely discredited and bigoted smear. Barack is not a Muslim. Period! BUT, so what if he was! I didn't know that being  -- or once being -- a Muslim, a Jew, a Mormon or even an EVANGELICAL, mean't that you couldn't be president.

Another boycott of Fox News by Barack and other top Dems is in order. Can I get a terrorist fist jab to that?

Posted by NiceguyEddie in reply to open_mind

Hume has no business in broadcasting.  He has a face for radio and a voice for newspaper.  And seeing as how lazy he (consistently) is about vetting his sources, I wouldn't say anything he writes would be "fit to print" anyway.  Why does this memebr of the walking [brain] dead even have a job?  http://www.skepdic.com had me convinced that there's no such thing as "Zombies" but after watching a few of this guy's broadcasts, I'm not so sure.

Thanks, Hume!!  Your stellar *reporting* makes me proud to be Fox's *news* biggest fan!

Obama has a half-brother? Of mysterious background?

What a feast for the Right. Are Democrats crazy to nominate this guy?

It's going to be a disaster in November. A total debacle for Dems.

Carlileb, you don't give a damn about the Democratic party and whether they win or lose in November, you're just a whinning pathetic Hillary supporter that can't get over the fact that she lost!

If you had a brain you'd realize that ANY Democratic nominee will be exposed to the Republican handbook of dirty politics. If you had a goddamn set of balls you wouldn't be running around like a chicken with your head cut off crying "The Democrats are going to lose", "The Democrats are going to lose".

You don't have a freaking clue what's going to happen in November and your Madam Cleo psychic bullsh*t is old!

He's baack. I guess the mourning period is over. Carlile has been predicting Obama will lose since the beginning of the primaries. With Carlile's track record of prediction, I'm sure Obama will win now.

At least there are some biblical verses that are as relevant today as they were a few thousand years ago...

I am not my brother's keeper.

Most anyone with half a brain (and any sibblings) HAS to realize that!

Yeah.  No Democrat has ever won the presidency with a brother problem.

There were other presidential brothers as well....

And Michael Reagan proved to be an embarassment to his adopted father, St. Ronnie.  Just as Michael Reagan continues to be an embarassment to humanity today:

* * * * *

A Friend in the White House

Monday, May. 25, 1981

Michael Reagan drops a name and imperils a job

Michael Reagan embodies the entrepreneurial vitality that the new Administration reveres. He has sold clothing, boats and food. He has dabbled in gold mines and gasohol equipment. He asked to join his father's former radio syndication service and he tested the waters in politics. Last December the President's adopted son, 36, signed on as a vice president for marketing at Dana Ingalls Profile, Inc., of Burbank, Calif., a 35-employee aerospace supplier. Last week he said angrily he would abandon that career, after being criticized for using his father's name to seek defense contracts.

The younger Reagan's troubles began in March, when he telephoned several military installations—including Tinker Air Force Base near Oklahoma City, which supervises the maintenance of the President's plane, Air Force One—asking how to get on the "approved" list of contractors. He followed up the call with a letter that said in its second paragraph:

"I know that, with my father's leadership at the White House, this countries [sic] Armed Services are going to be rebuilt and strengthened. We at Dana Ingalls Profile want to be involved in that process." Though Reagan's pitch was not illegal, it struck at least one ranking bureaucrat as "a dubious sort of behavior." Added J. Jackson Walter, director of the Office of Government Ethics of Michael's name-dropping: "Why doesn't he just use a hammer?"

After the letter was first disclosed, in the Oklahoma City Times, White House Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes described Michael as "hounded by the media." Added Speakes: "I don't think the President has any problems with the way Michael is doing business." Then cannier heads prevailed. Later the same day Speakes announced that Presidential Counsel Fred Fielding would advise all four Reagan children on possible conflicts of interest, a procedure said to have been planned but not carried out before the President was shot March 30. Michael Reagan then bitterly announced that he would quit Dana Ingalls. He added he was "tired of having to explain his actions" to the media, and worried: "Now, wherever I go, peopie are going to be afraid to do business with me because they don't know if the press is going to come in." Then, in a characteristic flash of humor, he said he would follow his father's new advice: "Don't write any letters."

He may wish he had listened to his father sooner. A few weeks after the election, at a family dinner, the President encouraged his children to consider legitimate business opportunities but warned against exploitation. If they had any doubts, he said, they should check with a White House adviser. In office, however, President Reagan discontinued guidelines, adopted late in the Carter Administration, that discouraged members of the President's family from joining firms doing business with the Federal Government.

NEWS FLASH..Carlilb, Sen Obama IS the nominee of the Democratic Party. If you decide to vote for him great, if not, great. The one thing you have is your vote. Use it wisely. And, a P.S., Sen Clinton is not the nominee so you cannot vote for her.

Did you know that Sen. McCain has a half-brother of questionable character floating around? Do you think  he should be fair game for the Democrats and if so, why?

I got the above information from the same source as Fox News and Britt. Where you may ask? Here is a clue..... Any toilet paper floating around.

Posted by Soonerborn in reply to princeofwheels

You are suggesting that the Dems only have one vote.  You know their motto "vote early and vote often".

Posted by friedbergboy1422 in reply to Soonerborn

And you know the Republican motto: Supress the vote, the more who vote, the worse their chances.

Posted by fawltylogic in reply to carlileb5935

What's mysterious about his background?

Posted by susangee in reply to carlileb5935

Obama's brother is "of mysterious background"? What the heck does that mean? He's from Kenya and practices the Muslim faith. Nothing "mysterious" there. Oh, wait -- he probably also practices cannabalism and wears a bone through his nose. Now get back in the time machine and return to 1700.

Posted by wzwriter in reply to carlileb5935

Obama has a half-brother? Of mysterious background?

Reminds me of the "Doonesbury" strip back when Poppy Bush was in office.  They featured Poppy's evil twin, Skippy.

Posted by friedbergboy1422 in reply to carlileb5935

Carli,

What are you going to do as a Dem to combat smears?  Do you think that the Republicans would not have smeared Hillary in similar ways?  What makes you think Obama is less prepared than Hillary?

Posted by BillJ-MN in reply to carlileb5935

Obama has several half-brothers and half-sisters.  He wrote about several of them years ago in his book Dreams From My Father.  This isn't new information and there's nothing mysterious about it.  As for what his brother said, bear in mind that the two never even met until both were well into adulthood.  They each probably know very little about each other's childhoods.

Posted by ollied2330 in reply to carlileb5935

Yep, since there are so many unknowns, the neo-cons{ the 28% } can invent all sorts of "FACTS" about this. The real disaster for the bushies will be when dmes REALLY control congress AND the White House. Can't wait..

Brit Hume has sold his soul to the devil

Posted by kromecom48 in reply to vshdst1130

What soul? That's an absurd suggestion -- a FOX shill with a soul! What next . . . . a Cheney with a conscious?

You can smell the desperation coming from the likes of hume and fox as they've got NOTHING and it shows big time.

Posted by SueEld

gotta love the lies of Hume.

Posted by petertruong992492

If you have a doubt or not trust about the person, especially a candidate of American President, stay away from him, and don't vote. Don't make a mistake - a big mistake.

Posted by fawltylogic

Well, now the lie is out there, and the rightwingers will repeat it until it becomes truth.

Posted by Haram Kufar

As George Carlin's sportscaster character Biff Barf said "I call 'em as I see 'em. And if I don't see 'em, I make 'em up!"

Posted by princeofwheels

Upon further review, it seems to me that the script written for Hume to read had a little editorial lie. Sen. Obamas' brother said that "HE" was a Muslim. The Fox liars moved that comment to appear after the Israeli statement thus creating a LIE. I guess this comes down to the understanding of what "HIS" is. Guess Fox did learn something from Pres. Clinton. But now they must be called out on this lie.

Posted by August Heat

Still with the Muslim thing, eh Fox?!?  What gets lost in all of this is the demonization of the Islamic faith in America.  Moreover, how can the right and its attack dogs like Fox question Baracks Christianity while linking him to Islam?  He's made bad associations with the Christian Reverend Wright, but he also has a Muslim background.  Which one is it?!?  Michelle Obama is a 'baby momma', but the Obama's are also elitist.  Again, which one is it?!?  Curious George or terrorist fist jab?!?  Which one Fox?  That network is lame.  These republicans that align themselves with this style of propaganda are lame as well!

Posted by kromecom48 in reply to August Heat

Thanks AH. Even the posters here are missing the larger anti-Muslim gist of this item.

Posted by watadoo

This is actually good news. If they can't dig up any real dirt, anything better to throw at Obama then a stupid lie, we're in great shape.  The 27% of racist republic party deatheaters who may actually believe idiots like Hume aren't going to vote for Obama for any reason. Let them rave about Obama beinga "musiim."  There is no lie easier to refute.

Posted by nerzog in reply to watadoo

I hope you're right. Unfortunately, I don't have much faith in the....um... aptitude... of the average American voter. The Republicans have formulated a multi-pronged offensive by which to confuse the electorate. With gasoline approaching $5 a gallon by Fall, the "Drill here drill now" mantra will start to sound good, even if it really won't help. Then there is the "Radical Gay Agenda" nonsense, which the California Supreme Court decision has pushed to the front again. Add to that all the lies that they're willing to tell about Obama, and even a limpd*ck like McBush may have a chance to win.

Posted by drzimmern1952

It is difficult to accept the fact that Obama is not muslim, since the father determines the religion of the child in muslim families, and Barack Obama was born to a muslim family. He has muslim siblings in Kenya, and one in Hawaii. Is this a conversion for political reasons?

Posted by nerzog in reply to drzimmern1952

Yesssssssssss. Obama is a secret Muslim, sent here by his Madrassa to take over our government and force us all to convert.....OR DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE! AIIIEEEEEEE!

Be afraid.....be very afraid! Vote for Grampy McBush! He'll save us from the evil towelheads!

GMAFB

Posted by friedbergboy1422 in reply to drzimmern1952

Dr.,

Please tell me that you are a satirist.  At what point was Obama a practicing Muslim?  When did this "conversion" you speak of take place?  When he joined his former church in Chicago over 20 years ago, do you think he was doing it for a political future over 20 years down the line?

Since you are concerned about religious conversions for political reasons, are you ok with McCain's religious conversion about 10 years ago?  Why or why not?

Posted by BillJ-MN in reply to drzimmern1952

Barack Obama was NOT born into a Muslim family.  He was born into an essentially secular family.  His paternal grandfather, whom he never met, was mostly a non-practicing Muslim.  His father also was non-practicing during the short time they lived together.  His mother had pretty much no religious faith.  There are no grounds for anyone to believe Obama has ever practiced the Muslim religion.

He chose Christianity as a young adult.  It was a choice he made when he was a community activist before he went into politics.  There is no way for any of us to know whether he did so for spiritual reasons as he says, or with an eye toward a political future.  I'm always going to have to have some reason to doubt the reasons a person gives for such a decision.  Regardless, it definitely did not qualify as a "conversion" from one religion to another, as you suggest.

He's made all the history I just gave and his reasons for his choices in his book Dreams From My Father.

Posted by kromecom48 in reply to drzimmern1952

Sorry -- but you're not real bright are you? SO WHAT IF HIS FATHER WAS MUSLIM. It has absolutely no bearing on anything AT ALL! How is the weather this time of year on planet bigot?!?

Posted by roundhouse in reply to kromecom48

No doubt. What's that line...on that old piece of paper? Something about no religious tests?

Posted by Kaliman in reply to kromecom48

This morning, Monica Crowley reminded us that Islam is patrilineal and that President Obama, by virtue of being a Christian and abandoning the faith of his father, may now be an apostate.  Apostasy is punishable by death in Islam, Monica Crowley reminded us.  Ergo, DON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA BECAUSE< EVEN IF HE IS A CHRISTIAN, HE WILL BE A TARGET OF RADICAL MUSLIMS.  Not like and US president would not be?  This is straight-up anti-Muslim propaganda.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to drzimmern1952

the father determines the religion of the child in muslim families(DrZ)

Even if we handicap you the rest of the BS in your post, this is a point that we really need to get you up to speed on; Your religion may be influenced by parents, friends, co-workers or somebody on the TV, but it's not determined by anybody but yourself. Religion is an opinion, no more hereditary than whether you prefer chunky peanut butter to smooth or like Bluegrass music.

Not to mention being irrelevant to the political process of a secular nation.

Posted by nerzog in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

I think you've nailed the primary sticking point. As a secularist, I think that anything in the Bible or any other religious book should be totally IRRELEVANT to public policy. Unfortunately, the Troglodytes who have the Republican Party by the short hairs believe that the Bible should be the basis for ALL of our public policy. Reconciling those two view points, I think, will prove impossible.

As infuriated as most of us Democrats are with some of the crap that gets by on Fox News - we should keep in mind that, for the most part, these idiots are just preaching to the choir. The more I read the tone of some posts in this thread the more I understand the right-wing outrage over Rev. Wright's comments. I don't claim to understand the logic or history behind what gets preached in any church - so why should I feel any different about Fox News? I've made a commitment to my nervous system over the past few months that I am not going to let anything Fox News says "get to me". They do what they do - are basically preaching what their congregation likes to hear - and so I just leave them to their own beliefs.

Now calling them out on an outright slander or lie, that's where we draw the line - and why I at least keep up with MMFA - even though I have removed Fox News from the channel selection of my remote!:)

Posted by shaggles

Much as I might like to I can't blame Hume or Fox for this.  They were just quoting the Jerusalem Post.  If they knew that the quote was inaccurate that's another thing but they probably didn't bother digging in to it any deeper.  They found a quote that said what they wanted to hear and didn't question it.

Posted by nerzog

"They found a quote that said what they wanted to hear and didn't question it."

Could be. By most credible accounts, that's how the Bush Administration treated the WMD intelligence about Iraq. Since FOX "News" is a virtual appendage of the Republican party, it makes sense that they would use the same techniques for disseminating propaganda.

Posted by SMTDL in reply to nerzog

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - sounds kinda like what Dan Rather did ..altho his alleged story was never proven to be inaccurate ..yet he was fired!!!!

What's gonna happen to Hume???..that's right...nothing ..not even a Fox false apology!!

This lie was repeated by Monica Crowley this morning during a rant about how the mainstream media will not allow attacks on Obama or his wife and during which she mocked Obama's stopthesmears.com ("or whatever") website but did not give one compelling reason why the stopthesmears ("or whatever") website is wrong.

Posted by nerzog in reply to Kaliman

That's a common Right Wing Propaganda technique. They can't refute the substance, so they attack the messenger. They did it to Joe Wilson , Scott Ritter, and Scott McClellan; it's the only way they can defend the indefensible.
BRITT HUME,FOX(FALSE) NEWS CHANNEL,bought and paid for by the REPUBLICAN PARTY. They exhist only to further the REPUBLICAN'S FARRIGHT WING AGENDA.
