Fox & Friends on Michelle Obama's comments: "The Claws Come Out"

Summary: Fox News' Gretchen Carlson asserted that Michelle Obama was "taking off the gloves and letting loose the claws" in making what "some say ... is a personal attack on Hillary Clinton." Later, co-host Brian Kilmeade stated that Obama "said ... 'If you can't run your own house, then you can't run the White House.' " Kilmeade then asserted, "Many people are saying that she's talking about Hillary Clinton." And on-screen text said, "The Claws Come Out: Mrs. Obama Aims at Sen. Clinton." But Kilmeade and Carlson did not provide the rest of Obama's quote, in which she talked about herself and her family -- not any other candidate -- referring to their efforts to balance campaigning and family life and ensure that their children will continue to "come first."

Kilmead-"right thats fine"

Facts are fine but please let's move on and make the story more interesting...forget the facts they're boring.

Great point...it's done all the time and is very irritating. Most of the talking heads claim that they are promoting public debate in order to more fully inform the public.

The reality is just as you stated "please let's move on and make the story more interesting"...they just keep casting around until they find someone who supports their position and then beat it to death.

Who really typed the above post? and what have you done with Wesley?

Nevermind that Michelle Obama said the remarks were not directed at Hillary. The F&F clowns pull a "John Gibson" (see yesterday's Big Story segment with K. Powers) and desperately try to create a cat fight.

And why didn't any of the F&F clowns think that what Michelle Obama said could apply more to Rudy's home life than it does Hillary? From all reports, Chelsea is a fine young woman who loves and supports her parents. That's more than one can say for Rudy's kids and ex-wife (wives?). I smell partisan politics....

Shame on Fox and Friends for having some fun, shame on them.

Are sexist remarks your idea of good clean fun?

Posted by JLyons in reply to onionhead

Where would you get that idea from?

Posted by onionhead in reply to JLyons

Well, they are talking about women and using the term "cats claws".  I think they were trying to make it look like a cat-fight between two "irrational" women (and at the same time suggesting that women aren't capable of governing rationally).  If this were two men, it would be called a "disagreement" and not a cat-fight.

And also it is some Fox News version of the networks' pseudo-news morning shows. And of course it is Fox News' secret mission statement to make the dems look bad and wallow in any dirt they pick up on them.

I guess my point is that when Fox News does it, they are not "just having fun".  It is meant to demean the dems and even suggest that these two women should be nowhere near the Whitehouse.

I am aware that I am some guy explaining sexism to a woman.  But I will say this: if my argument doesn't convince you, then I withdraw the sexism charge.

Especially with this witty zinger:

"Many people are saying she is talking about Hillary Clinton"

Exsqueeze me???

You just gotta love that Fixed Noise mainstay source: "people" that say things.

Yes, this is "real journalism" at its absolute finest, isn't it?.

When you have a political talking point to push, you need to look no further than that mysterious group of nameless, faceless people who say things.  Fixed Noise has a long legacy of sourcing "people" that say things.

You can excuse this as "having fun" all you want, but there are examples of serious journalistic credibility problems to be seen here if you read between the lines.

But its FOX and Friends, they are not a real news show or a real news organization?

Posted by pete592 in reply to JLyons

They relentlessly market themselves as "real journalism".

Being the most blatantly biased and spurious news source on Television is one thing, but constantly denying it in your marketing is another thing entirely.

How long do you think it took for the caption "Spears Flying" to be changed to "Darts Flying"? The transparency of the origin of Republican slurs is astonishing. Not that "Darts Flying" wouldn't just as easily be used as Guiliani vs Clinton, except of course it never would in a million years. It would never cross their racist .. sorry, I mean "fair and balanced" .. minds if it involved only white candidates.

Also heard this *story* on the ABC Morning show before I left for work today.

Apparently it's spreading like wildfire...& nobody is bothering to play Mrs. Obama's remarks in full.

But why would they? If they did that there'd be no story & they couldn't concoct this controversy.

Mrs. Obama is talking about her own family. If you hear the entire remark there is NO doubt of that.

The press is obviously itching for a fight between the Obama & Clinton camps.

oops...I meant CBS Morning Show.

Posted by worrierking in reply to jeter2

I can't wait for HBL to come along and tell us what you really said Jeter.

Posted by jeter2 in reply to worrierking

Probably that I love Hillary.

Well...it's just a crush actually ;-)

Posted by snoopy in reply to jeter2

So it's true then. Hillary wore that low plunging neckline top for you!

huh-huh, huh-huh-huh, that reporter's last name is Dyke...

Posted by jeter2 in reply to snoopy

Shhhhhhh :-X

I'm not proud of this ;-)

You're now a MediaMatters tipster!

Snippets work just find on Fox. Do you believe that the veiwers would understand the context anyway.

Posted by anotheramerican in reply to monknj80

I saw the Obama controversial stump speech on the Today Show this morning.  I think she makes a very good point.

Posted by jeter2 in reply to monknj80

Monk,

Not to stick up for FOX, but this snippet is being featured all over the boob tube. I heard it today on the CBS Morning show. And MMFA has already featured it being done on CNN twice.

Posted by monknj80 in reply to jeter2

I have seen it all over as well. It's bad the whole way round.

Posted by MickD in reply to jeter2

And in the meantime anything the Repub candidates say get unreported, until they end up on YouTube.

Watching Fox & Friends makes me want to kill someone...

Posted by roundhouse

Jeter makes a good point, media would love to report on a fight between Michelle and Hillary. Media is simply biased toward conflict, maybe the cheerleading in the run-up to the war had as much to do with self-serving inclinations toward ratings as it did any political agenda?...but I digress.

A natural question arises from the some people say focus of the Foxies on the Hillary v. Michelle muck. Isn't it just as likely that Mrs. Obama was taking a swipe at the Bush family? I mean the Bush family is a family that can't run the White House or their own house without running afoul of the law or morality.

Posted by anotheramerican in reply to roundhouse

Interesting hypothesis. But since Bush is not running, I seriously doubt she's referring to his him.

Posted by roundhouse in reply to anotheramerican

It goes to bigger picture of the fallacy that is conservative family values. I mean why not emphasize the failures of Bush as the failures of conservatism? The two are inextricable. Bush is a very effective conservative, he pushed through a huge conservative agenda. It just happens that conservatism doesn't work.

Posted by anotheramerican in reply to roundhouse

I do not think of Bush as conservative in the same vein as say Reagan. Bush has gone against the base more than once.

Posted by roundhouse in reply to anotheramerican

So? Reagan didn't maintain fidelity to the Republican base. No President ever does what the base wants 100% of the time.

Bush pushed through No Child, Clear Skies, appointed two right-wing Supreme Court Justices, has broken unions, furthered the cause of market deregulation, aggregated Executive authority, disassembled seperation of church and state...that's quite a list of conservative accomplishmnets. Unfortunately, none of it has generated broad prosperity or greater national security. It's done just the opposite, hence the failure of Bush is the failure of conservatism.

But at no point did Fox & Friends air the full context of Michelle Obama's remarks.

The other day on a thread regarding Hillary and the "working" surge, Tommy ask why Dems have to continue to explain their statements.  I took his comment to mean Dems were either incapable of expressing themselves or the purposely left "wiggle" room in making statements. There is nothing wrong with the statements Dems make it's the reporter or in this case Fox who never in a million years will quote any Dem correctly. They don't make any effort to report facts just what will help in their bias news.

Interesting hypothesis. But since Bush is not running, I seriously doubt she's referring to his him.

That makes no sense. The Obamas have been quite critical of the Bush administration and their handling of many policies. Michelle's statement--IF it were an intentional swipe at someone--is not restricted to only those who are running for president. Like Roundhouse, those same words could have also applied to him.

Posted by johnny_nyc8351

See how this works?

First they say "some say" without quoting sources .

Then they ask you to watch and decide.

Then they cut the quote off where it makes their point.

Then they discuss the truncated quote as if it's accurate.

They use a lie to frame the discussion.

Josef Goebels never did it better.
