Citing Bush attack on Dems, MSNBC's Kelly O'Donnell did not mention pork in prior GOP war funding bills

In an April 19 report on MSNBC Live regarding a meeting the previous day between congressional leaders and President Bush to discuss an emergency war supplemental spending bill, NBC News White House correspondent Kelly O'Donnell uncritically reported, "He [Bush] wants what they [the White House] term a 'clean bill,' meaning no timetables, and no extra spending for things that don't deal with the war." During an April 3 press conference, Bush called for a "clean bill that funds our troops on the front lines." However, O'Donnell made no mention of the fact that, as Media Matters for America has noted, every previous supplemental war funding bill contained money for unrelated projects. Indeed, in previous years, the Republican-led Congress, in some cases acting at the behest of the White House, added funding for "pet spending projects," as an April 4 Washington Post article reported:

This 'pork barrel' nonsense insults somebody's intelligence... either that, or it insults somebody for not having a shred of intelligence, I don't know.

If and when the president vetos the Defense supplemental, is there anybody with a brain who thinks it will be because of 'pork'?

Who is so dumb in these matters, as to not know that the president's veto threat is entirely due to the 'timetable'?

Why then does the president, and his many "media" hacks, invoke 'pork' while invoking the veto threat?

Because he and they are scared, that too many of the American People are too supportive of ending the occupation of Iraq, to supportive of the 'timetable'...

...and so, desperate to collect the opinions of every last little person who doesn't know any better, he and they keep invoking 'pork', trying lamely to make an excuse for the threatened veto, without mentioning the only reason for that threat: The 'timetable'.

Somebody is really stupid here... and I'm pretty sure I know who it is.

It's not about 'Porky Pig', it's about an occupation that kills U.S. troops and drains the U.S. treasury...

...and how to bring it to an end.

"Who is so dumb in these matters, as to not know that the president's veto threat is entirely due to the 'timetable'?"

They're called the Republican base.

These are the people who apparently slept through the last ten years.

"The president's own request last year for emergency war spending included $20 billion for Gulf Coast hurricane recovery"

Jeez, what a generous contribution... especially considering that the ruination of New Orleans turns out to be the result of negligence and cover ups by the Corps of Engineers with respect to the failed levee systems. But I wonder where even that money went...

Posted by monknj80 in reply to IRONY 101

Not only "where that money went", but how much of that money was wasted?

Posted by conleytgwinn in reply to monknj80

Not as much as you think: although there were some very public wastages (such as the many trailers purchased to house victims, but never installed; rather, allowed to decay unused) and some corruption (outside scammers, fraud by claimants) deployed as cover; the bulk of the money went right where it was always intended to go - into the coffers of Repugnant politicos and their corporate allies.

Oh, come on... no one really expected Kelly to do some honest-to-God reporting here. Did they? And they call it a Liberal Media. I laugh, and I laugh.

Now lads, play nice.  Now I'm not about to sing O'Donnell Abu! but to give Kelly her due, she did call the Shrub's use of the 73 days a "device," and she did acknowledge that the WH has credibility problems.  I've seen worse.

Pardon the off-topic post.

But I've noticed a significant lack of trolling wingnuttery in threads like this. The trolls only seem to care about the posts that have to do with some right-wing celebrity talking-head.

It would seem that actual, substantive, issue reporting by MMFA is not conducive to their level of debate.

I'm personally grateful that MMFA posts run the gamut. But I think it's very interesting that the wingnuts avoid these threads like vampires avoid garlic.

astute observation, deez.... i remember, back in the day, when threads like these would get as many posts as O'Lielly and the others... now most of those posts have these newbies pounding away at the keyboard like a Southern Baptist on the podium...

I checked out this thread earlier and didn't bother to post because it irks me that BOTH parties attach PORK to important Bills and when one gets called on it their defense is inevitably the tired worn out "well the other side did it too!!!" excuse.

Having said that Kelly O'Donnell should have pointed out that BOTH sides loaded up their respective Bills with PORK.

And Congress should be chastised for this business as usual pig fest.

IF the Democrats & those Republicans that agree with them truly want an end to this war, then send Bush a clean bill. And leave him without his phony excuses to veto it.

There is a word for a Congressman that doesn't try to put pork into bills: ex-congressman.

Americans want low taxes and high public expenditures, and in this one particular they get what they want.

Agree, J2.  We were told following the election there was going to be a "new" demeanor in Congress and now we find that "new" means that earmarks are going to D districts instead of R districts, but outflow still exceeds income.  Good news from WA DC is that the deficit isn't growing as fast as it was, but it's still growing.

Is KELLY O'DONNELL any relation to ROSIE P'DONNELL??? Just as stupid and brain-dead as her DUMB-DEMOCRAT FATSO-NITWIT!!! What part of a 'clean funding bill' does she not basically understand??? Or do both ROSIE and KELLY have an aversion to water/soap as well as sentient thought??? Is MSNBC only 'replaying' videos/'alleged news' of murderous scum - or will they eventually return to 'NEWS' that is not authorized by the DUMB-DEMOCRAT PARTY???

Pardon me, zajaimot6521, you seem to have stumbled out of freeperville, or an anti-O'Donnell website.

Back to the pork topic, although both parties succumb to the temptations of the pork, the conservative machine has done a great job of keeping their suckers convinced that Repubs are fiscally conservative.Living among the confused as I do, I hear it to this day.All that's needed is for the GOP to generate a few emails with American flags and scary Mexicans, and the faithful go along with anything else they're told.

I think Kelley prefers the ReNAMBLAcan party

Once again, an example of the hypocrisy of the current administration.

Actually, adding pork to the Defense spending bills started in late September 2001.  Numerous Republican and - I'm sorry to say - some Democratic Members jumped on the chance to add their pet projects.  Very sadly, much of this money came from the Maintenance and Repair budget.  It is my personal opinion that much of this pork got our military killed - lack of body armor, lack of Humvee armor, etc.

This "pork" is small potatoes compared to the contractors bellying up to the trough of no-bid and cost-plus contracts that total billions of dollars.

I wish I was a defense contractor (or congressional limo driver - remember multi-million dollar security contract he got) so I could cash in on this gravy train.
