ABC, Wash. Post failed to report Bush's omission of Katrina, New Orleans in State of the Union address

Neither ABC's World News with Charles Gibson nor The Washington Post, in their January 24 coverage of President Bush's State of the Union address, noted Bush's failure to make a single reference to Hurricane Katrina or ongoing recovery efforts in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, despite his August 2006 pledge to "stay until the job is done" in the Gulf Coast. Bush only briefly mentioned Hurricane Katrina in his 2006 State of the Union address, which he gave five months after the disaster took place. According to the most recent polling, taken at the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a majority of Americans do not think Bush has followed through on this promise to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

"a majority of Americans do not think Bush has followed through on this promise to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast."

Bush has never kept any promise he made during any of his SOTU speeches, except invading Iraq.  And his party lets him get away with it.

100%

Absolutely. And, the right-wingers expect an ovation from this clown at the SOTUA? Please. Talk is cheap to these folks. They don't care.

Here's some food for thought:

Name one thing the Republicans have been right about in the last 6 years. ONE thing. Anything.

Let's check out the list:

  • abstinence only
  • school vouchers
  • prescription drugs
  • al-Qaeda + Iraq, BFF
  • WMD
  • "greeted with flowers"
  • SURGE!
  • Kerry insulted the troops!
  • etc.

The list goes on. They've been wrong, dead wrong, on every count.

At this point, if Bush/Cheney went national TV and said they were rich, white men I'd ask for verification.

Bush and the last Republican majority has cast their party as the Republicants - incompetents who can't get anything done.

Sorry this is spill over from the thread about Bush referring to the "Democrat party" in the SOTUA.

My guess is that W, as I like to call him, thought he could just sweep it under the political rug and it shouldn't surprise anyone who knows him. It's still "hard to fathom" as one columnist said. Well I say it's typical of a president who is stolid when it comes to the suffering of human beings around the world, let alone in our own backyard.

Katrina is yesterdays news in the eyes of the Republican Administration.

WTF is the point here? Katrina happened almost two years ago. Would it really make that much difference if he had pitched off a quick sentance about continuing to rebuild? Why should he address old news? Do you also want him to talk about how awesome it is that the soviet union fell or that we landed on the moon?

The fact that most of the media made such a big deal out of this just proves an absurd liberal bias, desperate to attack the president for any or no reason.

The point is it was the most devistating disaster in American History and the city is still not recovered. He can bring up 9/11 but cant discuss Katrina?

Excellent point Dorris. The aftermath of katrina is still an ongoing issue.

If Katrina is yesterdays news, I don't want to here another republican utter anything about 9/11 again.

Doris,

Please accept my apology. I had the wrong idea about you and obviously mischaracterized you in a past post of mine. I don't always agree with you, but you seem very fair and reasonable. I respect that.

You must mean "recent" history. There have been plenty of disasters that are worse than katrina. Chicago fire? SF earthquake? the list goes on. Clarify your points when you make them. Katrina is obviously the worst disaster the US has seen in the last 3 years. But, if you go past that, you are wrong. And, the last I checked, ALL the other cities involved in great disasters have recovered. Why is it taking NO so long? Perhaps you shouldn't be looking at blaming the government (at least not the federal part) what is local government doing now? How about the individuals who were evacuated? Are they back rebuilding, or still off in another state waiting for someone to do the work for them?

You obviously don't have the eye of a Hawk

Or you would have read this right near the top: despite his August 2006 pledge to "stay until the job is done".

New Orleans is, as opposed to Iraq, part of the Union.  He made a specific promise about it just a few months ago.  Naturally he should have said something about it in his "State of the Union" address.  The fact that he left it out entirely means that, like Osama Bin Laden, he doesn't "think that much about it, to tell you the truth."

And Doris: very good point about 9/11.  Couldn't have been better.
