Media conservatives hype discredited NewsBusters post on background foliage in Clinton video

Summary: Numerous media conservatives have touted a discredited post on the Media Research Center's NewsBusters weblog to baselessly claim that Hillary Clinton recorded her announcement video launching her presidential bid months prior to actually announcing. Even though the post was later updated to add that a reporter "whom I respect informs me that video was produced last week in DC," hosts such as Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity touted the NewsBusters post to support the claim.

So what if she had recorded it months ago?  These guys are pathetic.

Posted by valentinian in reply to rusty shackleford

Well obviously, it is "just another part of her fundamental dishonesty with the American people." It is equally obvious that it is beneath the dignity of such serious defenders of the American people to point to any other "dishonesty" (fundamental or otherwise) in Senator Clinton's past. It's enough that she was married to a guy who lied about a blow job.

Posted by rusty shackleford in reply to valentinian

Maybe as Bush-worshippers they can't deal with the notion of a president who prepares for things in advance.

Posted by autopsychic in reply to rusty shackleford

" So what if she had recorded it months ago? "

Because it would lead one to believe that Hilary is simply doing what is needed to do to win the white house and not being honest to the American people. I'm not saying it is or isn't true but that would be the implication of her recording it months ago. Especially with her not admitting that she was indeed planning on running for president. Don't you think it would be a bit of misinformation if she had with-held this bit of information till now?? Not that any democrat is guilty of misinformation, but it would seem pretty "Kerry-esk" to me.....' I'm not running, wait... I am running '

Posted by rusty shackleford in reply to autopsychic

It is entirely possible that she made the video before making the final decision to run.  So what?  Is this all you guys have?

Posted by bittermarv in reply to autopsychic

In her Senatorial debate, she was quite clear about the possibility of her run for the Presidency.  A question was posed to her about her potentially running, and she said that it was possible, and that voters needed to know that when deciding on which Senatorial candidate to vote for.

So she hasn't been misleading anyone.  The onus is on you to demonstrate otherwise.

Normally I avoid whataboutery but, in this case:  If  we're calling that kind of coyness "Kerry-esk," what should we call the defining integrity down from "Anyone who leaks classified information will no longer be in my administration.." to where we are now?  Shrubbery?

I predicted this would happen [patting myself on the back]

My post from the thread titled:

Hotline's Todd: Clinton aides will "never admit" purported truth about timing of announcement

=====

I'm loving this new format...thanks MMFA :-)

Just a heads up....

The BIG NEWS according to a few Right-Wing sites I just visited is that  there are leaves on the trees & flowers in the background as Hillary is making her [video] announcement INDICATING [they claim] that she may have taped it last Summer or Fall.

Expect THIS to be made a BIG DEAL of by Fox, Rush etc.

Prescient indeed. Excellent work.

Posted by jeopardude

If I ever get to a point where I analyze the leaves on a tree behind someone on a video, please shoot me. That will mean I have become too pathetic to live.I'm not saying that about others. That's just my own personal barometer.

Posted by southparkliberal

who.  the.  hell.  cares?  will someone please tell me why this is news?  I don't give a crap if she recorded it last week or last decade... she's not the candidate I'd like to vote for, but perhaps she could be treated like a human being by the national press?  this whole business with the plants is overblown, pointless, and frankly shameful.

Posted by tommy

I am more interested in Hillary's positions on issues and her qualifications and experience than whether her frickin flowers are blooming in January.  Call me shallow.

Posted by mefirst in reply to tommy

wassup, shallow.  couldn't resist. anyway, i've seen a ton of reports in the last couple weeks about the cherry blossoms already blooming in d.c.

Posted by Conchobhar in reply to mefirst

I was wondering when someone would mention the cherry blossoms.  The fact that "MEFIRST" scooped everyone is too good for words.

Here's something I haven't seen mentioned, though I haven't read all posts yet:  What possible reason would Hillary have to pretape her announcement by so many months?  What would it have profited her?  More time to bake cookies in January?  She's a very careful politician, and there's no way she'd leave something like that lying around.  There's also no way she'd craft an announcement that far in advance, knowing it could be made obsolet by events.

These guys are getting weaker and weaker.

....and the desperate attempts to smear Clinton and Obama continue...

By next week, they'll have Hillary secretly filming her annoucement during a dinner with Kim Jong Il, and Barack Obama learning how to build bombs at an Al Qaeda training camp.

This is only the beginning.

Posted by monknj80

Actaully only a few weeks ago the temps herein Jersey were in the 70s. So what if a few leaves are on the trees. This is sad.

Posted by valentinian in reply to monknj80

Nah, I checked out the video... it's full summer.

I actually find this pretty funny... kind of goes to how calculating she is not.

"Come, henchmen, let us secretly make the secret video which I will hold in secret until that hateful Obama announces!!! What do you mean, keep the window out of the shot? I love those French doors. Who is feminazi around here anyway? Bwaaa-ha-ha-haa!!"

Posted by monknj80 in reply to valentinian

Actually since you post the link, those might actually be evergreens. DO you know wht an evergreen is?

Posted by fawltylogic

I hate people who plan things in advance. From now on, I think all political announcements should be announced with the politician stating that day's sports results, so we know he didn't think about it too far back.

Posted by valentinian in reply to fawltylogic

Yeah! Or else, they should hold the daily newspaper, like kidnap victims...

Posted by HughG in reply to fawltylogic

fawltylogic: "From now on, I think all political announcements should be announced with the politician stating that day's sports results, so we know he didn't think about it too far back."

Won't work, Fawlty. Remember, the Big Moneyed Vast Klinton Konspiracy will use its Enormous Cash Reserves to pay the sports teams off, to get the results that they want, months in advance.

The LibrulMedia will know about the conspiracy, but they always carry water for the Clintons Evil Empire, so they'll keep the truth from the legions of GodFearinHardWorking Merkins.

I actually thought Beck's comment that she'd been planning to run for president since she was, like, 8 . . . was pretty funny. And probably true. I'm sorry, but I think Hillary Clinton's attempt at sincerity is a bad joke, and the notion that she wants a "conversation", that she doesn't already know exactly what is best for me, is ludicrous.

Not that I don't loathe the full-throated mindless savagery of the right, but seriously, HC?

Posted by mefirst in reply to jefffrane

you don't like the right

but you do repeat all their anti-hillary talking points. that could have been lifted verbatim from limbaugh.

The image over Glen Beck's left shoulder looks like a clear September day in New York not the current gray dismal weather . Is that World Trade Center 7 in the background? When did he actually record this?

Posted by sportsguydave

BECK: Ooh! No offense there, Hillary, but I think I'm going to take a pass on that conversation....

 ================================================

It's okay, Glen. Something tells me she'd have to dumb it down too much for you to get it anyway...

Posted by tex in reply to sportsguydave

SPORTSGUY:

Wait. Hillary would have to "dumb down" to speak with Beck? Maybe you're being unfair. Let me go look in the "internets" to put together a resume from BECK that shows me why he should have a national forum to tell me what he "thinks" about every subject under the sun.

He self-admits to being a drug addict and an alcoholic, and also to being a chickenhawk, but while those are not "deal busters" for being a rightwing foghorn, they don't fill me with confidence in his judgment or experience or background.

Perhaps his education level is what makes the difference. Perhaps he has master's degrees in foreign policy and economics and sociology? Ah, but that would mean he learned in a university or college, and any education provided in such "Liberal" bastions is bound to be suspect.

I'm stumped. Why should ANYONE care a whit what Beck says or does? It's a mystery. A rightwing mystery, meant NOT to be solved or even questioned by his audience.

THIS man wishes to help you form your opinions on the vitally important issues of the day (and has been given phenomenal access to public forums to do so, thanks to rightwing media ownership):

http://www.glennbeck.com/newsroom/presskit/2004%20Beck%20Bio.pdfFrom his official "presskit": "Glenn Beck, 40 ... the former Top 40 DJ entered the talk format in 2001 "listeners are drawn to this modern-day storyteller who is armed with a quick wit, an informed opinion, and a unique ability to inspire others to experience their full potential with an open heart."WOW. A DJ with no formal higher education and addiction and relationship problems. Sure, that's the guy I want telling ME what to think about political matters ... or matters of society or ethics or maturity.

His only SKILL? He can follow rightwing hatemongering positions and talking points, and rally rightwing lemming followers by the twin "abilities" of being glib while having no discernable conscience. Other skills? None.

Tex, Tex, me Boyo

Chill out, lad.  Didn't you read where the joxer said he's a "thinker?"  And that's not enough for you?  Jaysus, but  you're hard to please.

I thought the wignuts were bad but this takes the cake. they are beyond Pathetic!

Posted by clams casino

The two best quotes are Beck saying, "I'm a thinker," and Hannity saying, "You know, you've got ilterally flowers in bloom in the background there." Yeah, Sean, you mean the flowers on the table...in a vase? Does he think that florists don't have flowers in the winter?

Posted by HuntingtonBeachLefty in reply to clams casino

That's "literally flowers" clams.

Not the figurative or imaginary kind, like the Iraqis keep throwing at us.

Did Hillary Clinton ever say that she recorded the video only last week?  There has been speculation for months regarding whether Hillary Clinton would run for President.  All the while reports indicated that she has only said she was attempting to make up her mind.  If Hillary Clinton filmed a video (when the leaves were green) to be shown when and if she elected to run what's wrong with that?  What if she had decided not to run and the video leaked out? What would that have proven?  Do these people like Beck and Hannity consider themselves journalists, spewing speculation of no relevance and trying to turn it into something scandalous?  What's next...  the green leaves prove that Hillary killed Vince Foster?  The right wing media have gone completely insane.

Posted by conleytgwinn

Give Boortz, Beck, Hannity, et. al., credit where credit is due: it takes real guts to charge any opponent with "fundamental dishonesty with the American people" when one's entire stock in trade is precisely absolute, unremitting, and unflinching "fundamental dishonesty with" ALL sentience. If any of these creatures of the night - err, Right - have EVER uttered a single syllable of truth, I would wager that it was an accident: perhaps circumstances changed between the plot of the lie, and the publication thereof.

Glenn Beck:  Thinker, not arborist

Before I read the entire MMFA article, I thought that this is just the kind of thing that Glenn would have on his "Real Story: segment.

Sure enough, there is it was.  A "Real Story" on Hillary, the video and the foliage.  Glenn never disappoints.

The clown of CNN makes me laugh every time.

Posted by Crumble

I think the right-wingers might be on to something here. For example, I've noticed that often when Bush is speaking, there is an abundance of unkempt, rotting foliage behind him. I believe he calls it his cabinet.

Posted by mikeinmd

Do you think, perhaps, that these RW jokers have gotten jealous of Stephen Colbert's success that they have made a concious decision to lapse into self-parody?  Otherwise, what self-respecting network would put on such transparently stupid drivel?

Posted by Rybock

"But I am a thinker". Now THAT was funny. Beck must not be a reader, as even the Washington Times has covered how cherry blossoms were blooming months early weeks ago (http://washingtontimes.com/metro/20070104-112334-1685r.htm), so green on plants isn't unheard of. Plus the fact that they would set up a nive looking shot, so that could have been the one section of green visible outside.

Posted by billie789

I've said it before, you guys need to cut Brother Beck a little slack. He's a recovering alcoholic, a Republican and a Mormon. Three Strikes. He's spiritually bankrupt, mentally overdrawn and his ethics account is running on fumes.

Hannity, Limbaugh, et al, will be shoving pineapples in each other's asses in Hell...so they're taken care of by virtue of kharmic justice. I kept hoping Glenn would pull his pineapple-head out of his ass when he was still funny. Not to be.
