Russert failed to challenge McCain claims on Lieberman, Gulf War, McCain's plan for Iraq

Summary: Tim Russert did not challenge Sen. John McCain's dubious claim that it is not "clear-cut" that the war is unpopular nationally because, if it were, Sen. Joe Lieberman "would not have been re-elected in the state of Connecticut." McCain also falsely claimed that "[a]t the time of the first Gulf War, only 15 percent of the American people thought we ought to go to Kuwait and get rid of Saddam Hussein there" and was not challenged by Russert about his changing positions on the number of additional troops he would like to see sent to Iraq.

McCain lost his wheels a long time ago. i couldn't remember sen McCain's responses for they were unremarkable. Or maybe he didn't answer the questions asked, just the ones he rephrased.

I agree Wolf

McCain was almost robotic in his answers and Russert made NO real attempt to challenge him, as he did his other guest Ted Kennedy

CASE POINT ON "REASONING":

McCain says, "Connecticut elected Lieberman" therefore ALL America is in favor of the Iraq War and any escallation that might be proposed.

As PRESIDENT, McCain can be expected to apply the same reasoning and arrival at conclusions as this example shows. Find ONE example that is an anomaly and goes against the overwhelming evidence across the USA to the contrary. IGNORE that there might be any other factors to explain that anomaly. IGNORE that on the very issue you expect that anomaly to PROVE, the candidate demonstrably tacked away from his stated position.

As PRESIDENT, McCain would be a disaster, because this "reasoning" is bad, intellectually dishonest, delusional, and bogus. And he SHOULD know it. That he apparently believes America is gung-ho for the War -- because Lieberman was elected -- shows conclusively that he does not have a mind suitable for holding ANY job, let alone the presidency of the United States.

People with such reasoning "skills" are most often confined in assisted-living facilities where they cannot harm themselves or others.

Weren’t the first Bush approval ratings in the high eighties to ninety during and after Desert Storm?

I just about spewed my Sunday morning coffee when McCain told the whopper about 15 percent public approval of Gulf War I. He just pulled that out of his ass, like O'Reilly does. It says something about our culture that our "free press" won't call politicians on such obvious lies.

I wonder if it's because they don't prepare, they don't care, or they just aren't that smart. Could it be some of the media folk are a bit 'dazzled' by the politicians?

ULTRA:

Sadly, it is because the rightwing in general have NO regard for the American People, and miss no opportunity to insult our intelligence.

And, they can't really be blamed. They think lying and fabricating and spewing talking points and ATTACK smearmongering WORKS. They think they owe "SUCCESS" to attacking Clinton nonstop, to smearing Kerry with the swift boaters, to NEGATIVE campaigning. They held total power for six years, and they think it is because FOX controlled the "news message", and that means talking-head pundits got to spew whatever distortions or untruths that popped into their minds.

In the "major media", these distortions and lies -- often birthed by the likes of Matt Drudge -- stood unchallenged as TRUTH, with the minor exception of fact-checking websites like Media Matters. The rightwing now believe their ONLY problem, and MISSION, is to discredit and hopefully eliminate those few people (like this site) who challenge their virtual monopoly in the rightwing press.

One of the great ironies of the "projection" style of the rightwing pundits is seen in Limbaugh's claim that the "light of truth" will destroy those who are false. He is being proven correct, but like the bogus evangalists claiming GODLINESS we have seen in our history -- Jim Jones, David Koresh, Jim and Tammy Fae Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, to name a few -- when that light shines, it shines on THEE.

The Rightwing, and America's Republicans, cannot survive where TRUTH is known; the TRUTH is the enemy of the rightwing, always.

Is it reasonable to assume that Russert even cares what McCain said last week?  For me, Jim Lehrer summed it pretty well in his June 06 CRJ Daily interview when he said:

“I don't deal in terms like "blatantly untrue." That's for other people to decide... My part of journalism is to present what various people say about it the best we can find out [by] reporting... I'm not in the judgment part of journalism. I'm in the reporting part of journalism.”

Chasing "guests" away doesn't sell soap.

Poor John McCain, he can't help himself; he has consumed the Bush Kool-Aide in order to get the blessings of the conservative power brokers (read William Melon Scaife, Pat Robertson,  Jerry Falwell, et al)

Who run their party.

Saddly yes, too many in the republican party are drinking that "special" cool-aid these days. While I have no love for the conservative party, I am hopeful for the day one of them will stand up and say enough!

Right now the neo-cons are a taint on the party. The overboard homophobia, the concealed and not so concealed racism (and sexism), the loud displays of "The United States was created by the hand of god to be a model of a christian society.", the turning of people in power into victims of the evil liberals, and on and on...

Where is that party that said smaller taxes and smaller government?

I have lost most respect for Russert. Just having McCain on for half his show was a joke in itself. Who exactly is he speaking for?

As far as McCain I have no respect. Now he's just lying, and as others have noted- Russert doesn't challenge his lies at all.

His drivel about Lieberman is just pathetic. Lieberman LOST the Democratic primary and was NOT the Democratic candidate in CT. because of his outrageous support of the way the current administration has waged war in Iraq.

Rather than bow out as everyone knows he ran as an Independent, and as such was able to get enough votes with the three way split and MOST of the Republican vote in CT. (with Republican national backing) to win)

Lieberman is a disgrace to the Democrat party. He's in for his won power reasons now, as is obviously McCain.

I use to really admire McCain, and a  one point appreciated his "straight talk express" way back when until he was effectively taken out of the presidential race by Bush Jr.'s thugs who smeared him mercilessly with literal carp.

Now he's in bed with this devil. It's alarming. Neither McCain or Lieberman are public servants, and both have zero credibility on this so called "winning" in Iraq.

I don't know what to think of Russert. He clearly had many opportunities to challenge and put up his infamous previous quotes, stats, etc. But he let McCain just get a free pass on his out and out lies.

No he didn't do that with Ted Kennedy.

I found the interview that was conducted on CBS Sunday's morning news show with Chuck Schumer much more relevant and informative.
