Greenfield and now Matalin defend Obama-Middle East references as a joke

Summary: Mary Matalin said discussion about Sen. Barack Obama's middle name, Hussein, is "really about nothing" and responded that co-host Alan Colmes should "get a sense of humor" after Colmes requested that Matalin ask her "conservative friends to drop the 'Hussein.' " CNN's Jeff Greenfield had similarly claimed that he was joking when he likened the style of Obama's clothing to that of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

oh, sure they'll say it's a joke now.

that's cause even reich wingers can still get their @sses sued off for slander.

Posted by bruce1ace in reply to snoopy

Of Course

The conservatives are never joking when they say things liberals question. And the liberals are always joking when they say things conservatives question. (See the other thread about the Dowd-Obama exchange).

Posted by snoopy in reply to bruce1ace

I did.

insults aren't debate, they are insults. The right is so quick to talk about respecting the officials, yet are always the 1st to be dismissive and disrespectful to any hopefuls who aren't of their persuasion. Using smear and innuendo to destroy someone's credibility is wrong. However, I fully support payback. Republicans have had a 10 year reign based on smear and innuendo, I am all for getting even before getting civil.

My Favorite

My absolute favorite headline on this site the past month was just recently removed, unfortunately, but said something to the effect of : Attacks on Media Matters!" and then goes on to link to a few columns by Malkin and MRC who apparently had the audacity to respond to columns written by Alterman and Boehlert, correcting what they thought were inaccuracies in the columns. Good grief, if that stuff qualifies as an attack I guess MMFA is in attack mode 24/7. How about a little thicker skin MMFA? You can dish it, but apparently can't take it.

Posted by snoopy in reply to bruce1ace

24/7, eh?

Well, watching right wing garbage and then recording it for austerity IS a 24/7 job. But you seem to forget, MMFA reprints, word for word, just what they say. Maulkin responding? More like Maulkin refining her original statement. That's like saying "ooooh, I didn't really mean niggah when I said it! I was just using it rhetorically speaking!"

Try again.

Posted by bruce1ace in reply to snoopy

No thanks

I like my previous post just the way it is. Have a nice weekend!

Posted by mefirst in reply to bruce1ace

can't take it?

you and other conservative posters are given as much space as you want to criticize, respond, attack. which is how it should be, but don't turn around and pretend you don't get your say.

Posted by bruce1ace in reply to mefirst

I can take it

I've been posting on and off for two years and you haven't chased me away yet. This is a good site.

However, MMFA's previous headline which I referred to about being "attacked" because a few bloggers responded to their column was ludicrous on its face. How about just saying "Malkin and MRC respond to our criticisms"? Playing the victim is so beneath the site. That's all I was trying to say.

Posted by mefirst in reply to bruce1ace

let me clear it up

you said mmfa can dish it out but "can't take it". i replied that they apparently can because you guys are pretty much given free rein. and truthfully if you wanted to debate that headline, perhaps you did then, but that would have been the time to do it. when we all had access to it and could debate whether it was an attack or not. just because you decide it was not an attack doesn't mean anything, and basically it's just opinion on both sides. the real question would be who's telling the truth and who is fudging. don't wait until something is off the board to decide you want to debate it.

Posted by bruce1ace in reply to mefirst

That's a fair point

To be honest, I wasn't able to post for a few days when those threads were new so I missed my opportunity. But I agree that my comments would have been more relevant on those threads. I'm sure I will have more chances down the road!

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to snoopy

Bruce, you last sentence nailed it....

40 years of Utopian dominance, prior to the "last 10 years" of Republicans" turn, and the Utos can't take it.

Posted by solon in reply to dorraine4367

40Years of Democratic dominance

10 Years of lying corrupt warmongers and the Public has had enough, lets hope despite the snivelling its another 40 years before the public trusts them again.

Posted by LarryE in reply to snoopy

Why?

Why are you letting him change the subject?

Posted by tommy in reply to bruce1ace

Correct

When conservatives joke it's mean spirited, usually racist, uncalled for slander. When liberals do it however, it's just a little rib sticking.......come on.

All together now "Double Standard"....

Posted by snoopy in reply to tommy

I'd really like to see a few examples

that stoop to the low standards of Limbaugh or Coulter, and have the high visibility you suggest. Humor me!

Posted by smokedcorn5887 in reply to snoopy

How about

How about Al Franken or Randy Rhoades? Oh, that's right. You said "high visibility".

Posted by snoopy in reply to smokedcorn5887

yeah, I did say that.

You don't see anyone on cable saying crap about your precious right wingers, and that's the point. Maybe you are ok with that, but I'm not. There is no fairness in purposely keeping one side silent in the media. That ain't capitalism, or market driven, that's purely ownership driven decision to promote one party above democracy. And before you say, buy your own station, just remember, not just anyone can buy a station. George Steph. has more than enough money to buy several stations, fact is he's prevented from doing so. But I guess you like unfair advantages, it's easier than having to prove yourself.

Posted by smokedcorn5887 in reply to snoopy

Oh my

I accidentally watched Kieth Olbermann a while back and if I remember correctly, he was bad-mouthing Foley. I could be wrong, though. I know I've seen people in the media bashing Tom Delay. So what? I could not possibly care less. And by the way, I don't consider anyone in politics (right or left) to be "precious". I'll leave the political "hero-worship" to you.

You whine that "one side is kept silent" in the media but you have Air America...Oh, wait. They might as well be silent because NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. Now THAT is capitalism in action for you. Why don't you go listen to NPR? They should be anti-capitalist enough for you. Or why not talk George Soros into buying a station? Nah, bad idea. Even he's not stupid enough to throw his money away. Like it or not, the left wing crap you guys are trying to peddle just doesn't sell in America. Grow up, act like an adult and get over it.

Posted by deeznuts in reply to smokedcorn5887

one-track mind

EVERYTHING you post turns into a tirade about Air America.

You've got them on the brain.

Seek help.

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to deeznuts

Eeeeevery one of your posts ....

targets AirAmerica, Smokey.

Imust have read 100 of your posts the last several days, and at least 2 of 'em targeted AirAmerica.

Can't you change the subject.

No--I understand. Bringing up Air America upsets the Utos here, and it's just too much fun.

Posted by snoopy in reply to smokedcorn5887

sharpened that hitler's youth knife lately?

it's getting kinda dull. But in the interest of your driving force (capatilism) I've gotta stone that will hew your blade true. Just bring a few coins and I'll make it so.

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to snoopy

Never heard of Capattilism...

but Capitalism's good. Try it sometime.

Posted by Easy to refute wingnuts in reply to dorraine4367

If you're going to be pedantic,

please try to do so, but you misspelled his misspelling. That also seems to be the level of care you put into the rest of your posts.

Posted by solon in reply to smokedcorn5887

Sure no one wants to hear what they have to say

Thats why Donahue had his networks highest rated program when it was taken off. Thats why Liberals won Senate races in Minnesota, Ohio, Vermont, and regulartly win them in Massachutsets, California, New York New Jersey and on and on. Man you really live in your own little world dont you.

Posted by solon in reply to smokedcorn5887

Your examples

Dont come anywhere near the level of advocating assasination of the President or a sitting Supreme Court justice not even in the same universe. Nor of beating liberals with baseball bats. You guys have tried this before, there is NO liberal equivelent of Coulter PERIOD.

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to solon

Whoa!

You're forgetting the beautiful people. Alec Baldwin in particular.

Posted by solon in reply to dorraine4367

Baldwin has a big mouth

He does not make his living as a pundit. He is not the voice of anyone but himself. Coulter and Savage make their LIVING being insane violence spewing hatemongers. Now you would have a point IF the media PAID him to spout his violent temper tantrums, which you are correct and he does to but they DONT so y0u DONT.

Posted by LarryE in reply to snoopy

I ask again

Why do we keep letting these trolls change the subject?

The issue is Greenfield and Matalin trying to weasel out of the wink-wink innuendo leveled at Obama with the shopworn "It was only a joke!" routine.

I recall that some years ago I was at a party where I objected to a seriously racist "joke." I was told in response that it was too bad I couldn't see "the lighter side of life." Because, y'see, it was "only a joke."

But "jokes" can carry real messages. So let's stay focused on the issue at hand.

Posted by heru in reply to tommy

A real conservative joke

Duhhbya's war plan

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to heru

Right in there...

with Kennedy's and Johnson's....

Posted by solon in reply to dorraine4367

And

Eisenhowers and Nixons

Posted by solon in reply to tommy

Bunk

When conservatives say tawdry and indefensible things its alway a joke. You guys have tried to pass off the most ludicrous calls for violence and vicious smears as jokes except you can never point out what the JOKE is supposed to be. Now I will give you that THIS time it seemed like a joke. An infantile and immature joke but a joke nonetheless. However trying to link this to a general double standard is completely without merit. When you can cough up liberals joking about murdering people or beating them with baseball bats get back to me.

Posted by dorraine4367 in reply to solon

I SAID...

Alec Baldwin. Don't ask for a quote--you'll have to dream up an apology for him.

Posted by solon in reply to dorraine4367

No appologies for Baldwin

He is a jerk, HE however is not PAID to be a jerk he is just one naturally. So there still is no double standard. I am sure there are lots of liberal jerks who are just citizens and speak for no one but themselves. CONSERVATIVES make their jerks rich buying their books and touting them as spokespersons, giving them radio shows and syndicated newspaper columns, when someone does that for Baldwing get back to me.

Posted by Easy to refute wingnuts in reply to dorraine4367

Why not?

"I SAID...

Alec Baldwin. Don't ask for a quote"

-----

Why not? If he spews hate as often as you say he does you should be able to find a quote as easily as one can locate oxygen. Why don't you post a few where he "jokes" about killing Supreme Court justices, or beating people with baseball bats before attempting to talk with them? How about a quote where he advocates killing all the leaders of a country and converting all the people to Christianity?

Because you can't, and you know it.

Posted by heru in reply to bruce1ace

Jokers

The Cons were also just joking when they showed a white girl coming on to Harold Ford. Its only coincidence that the white loser won because of it.

Posted by mefirst

hannity asks

what is wrong if people bring up his middle name. the real question is why you have to bring it up. i'm sort of a news junkie and to this day i do not know the middle names of howard dean, al gore, hillary clinton, and a whole group of people who have been around a lot longer than obama. if his middle name was arthur, fox wouldn't even bring it up.

Posted by smokedcorn5887 in reply to mefirst

If

If any of these people had the same name as a murderous dictator, trust me, you'd know it.

Posted by mefirst in reply to smokedcorn5887

couldn't agree with you more

fox would be all over them, for the same foolish reason. but what does the fact that....wait a minute, it can't be, you can't be serious, you're saying that sharing the same name means they would think the same things? say it ain't so. of course, i did point out your posts are to be regarded as pure entertainment.

Posted by LarryE in reply to smokedcorn5887

Thank you!

If any of these people had the same name as a murderous dictator, trust me, you'd know it.

Thank you! You have just conceded the entire argument. The reason the right keeps bringing up Obama's middle name is to try to subtly link him to a murderous dictator!

We accept your gracious unconditional surrender.

Posted by feckless in reply to LarryE

the middle name of a murderous despot.

The name "George" is about to go the same way as Adolph and Attilla.

Also there will be a massive assault of legal name changes for the thousands of people with the innocent misfortune of having the last name "Bush".

It took Saddam 20+ years to kill est. 2 million, George has done in 600k in just 3 years.

Posted by Easy to refute wingnuts in reply to smokedcorn5887

Obama's father was a murderous dictator?

"If any of these people had the same name as a murderous dictator, trust me, you'd know it."

-----

The only person that has the same name as Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. is his father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr.

Because you use the handle of a vegetable, should we assume you are equally brain-dead? It's the same faulty logic as you are trying here. But you would have no arguments at all if you didn't use faulty logic. It's the only type you know.

Posted by nukeboot

I must be missing something...

Doesn't using the full name, Barack Hussein Obama, have to be funny before you brush it off as a joke?

I defy anyond to explain to me how that is funny.

I don't mean funny as in the boy's fly is down on the playground funny.

I mean adult, clever funny.

Swing and a miss...

Posted by nukeboot in reply to nukeboot

er...

...anyone

Posted by jeter2 in reply to nukeboot

Not funny, just different...

At least for a President. We've simply NOT had Presidents with *ethnic sounding names* [outside of Van Buren...though that's a stretch]...I'm talking Italian, Greek [Dukakis would have fit here--had he won] Hispanic, Russian, Polish, Jewish...ok hopefully you all GET my drift.

So whether it's *politically correct* or not Barack Obama is NOT a *typical sounding* American President's moniker. Now ADD Hussein to the mix, and SOME people are falling over laughing about it. President Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmmmmm....just doesn't sound, dare I say it? American. PLUS there's that [former] dictator with the SAME name. Mix the 2 factors and well...

So yeah people [on the Right] are making jokes, snickering. MAYBE the name Barack Obama they would have left alone. BUT when you ADD Hussein, it tickles their funny bone. Childish? Of course. BUT sometimes we laugh at childish stuff.

Bottom Line: IF someone doesn't vote for Obama BECAUSE his name doesn't *sound* like our other Presidents more *typical American sounding names* OR because his middle name reminds them of Saddam...then they probably don't have enough intelligence to make a wise decision anyway. It's as STUPID as voting for someone because they are *good-looking*.

Posted by Marker

What's in a name

Call President Obama anything you want as long as you call him Mr. President first after the '08 election.

Posted by smokedcorn5887 in reply to Marker

President Obama

How 'bout we just call him "H"? Just kidding. What, exactly, does Obama stand for other than he's against AIDS and for abortion? I really don't know.

Posted by solon in reply to smokedcorn5887

Ok you dont know

I fail to see how YOUR ignorance is OUR problem. He has certainly talked enough about issues.

Posted by mefirst in reply to smokedcorn5887

smoked

i would recommend you tune in rush for your take on all the issues. you sound exactly like the guys that call in and say rush i never had a thought in my head til i started listenin' to you.

Have you ever noticed...

that the ones who deride others for having no sense of humor are the ones who are so obviously deficient themselves? It's hard to imagine Matalin even cracking a smile, let alone a good joke. And to compound the irony, does anyone know what Alan Colmes did before he got into radio (and well before signing up as Hannity's punching bag)? He was a stand-up comedian!

Honestly, when a right-winger accuses a left-winger of having no sense of humor, that statement itself is probably the funniest thing that the right-winger can ever muster.

Posted by feckless

White House Iraq Group member Matalin?

Why hasn't somone thrown a bucket of water on this witch?
